Andre M. Moore (born July 2, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois) is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the NBA for both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Denver Nuggets during the 1987–88 season. In 10 games he averaged 2.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. Moore was drafted by the Nuggets in the 2nd round of the 1987 NBA Draft.

Andre, a 6 ft 9 in (205 cm) power forward, played for Carver High School in Chicago before attending the University of Illinois-Chicago from 1982-83. He did not play for the Flames due to ineligibility. He then transferred to Loyola University Chicago where he had to again sit out the season (1983–84) due to being a transfer student. His next three seasons with the Loyola University Ramblers saw Andre play 85 games and average 16.5 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. In his senior year at Loyola (1986–87), Andre was the Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Year.

Andre also had a career in the Australia in the National Basketball League playing with the Brisbane Bullets and helping them to the 1990 NBL Grand Final series against the Perth Wildcats. Moore's outstanding play in the NBL saw him selected to 1st Team All NBL honours in 1990. He also played numerous All Star Games in the years to follow and was one of the most dominate big men in the league's history. He played 6 consecutive seasons as an import.

While in Australia, Andre had stints not only at the Bullets but with the Hobart Devils in 1995. Andre returned to the NBL for the 1999/2000 season with the newly formed Cairns Taipans where he played for 2 seasons. He retired from the NBL after 8 successful seasons and has made Brisbane, Australia his home.

1. High School Career

Andre grew up in Altgeld Gardens, one of the toughest housing projects located on the south side of Chicago. Despite the high crime rate, a lot of talented people also hail from this place. Andre attended Carver High School in Chicago. Carver is famous for producing NBA veteran Terry Cummings and Andre was also a teammate of NBA All Star Guard Tim Hardaway. Carver’s first real star was Cazzie Russell who also grew up in Altgeld Gardens. Cazzie Russell led Carver to the State Championship in 1963. Cazzie attended Michigan University and played professionally for New York, Golden State, Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago. Andre made the Sun Times High School All-City Team, Chicago Tribune High School All-City Team and Illinois All- State Team. Andre was also a High School All American Honourable mention in 1982. Carver High school was also ranked the 3rd best High School in the state. Andre was also a member of the All-City All Star team that defeated the Suburban All-Stars which featured the late Kevin Duckworth(Portland Trailblazers) and Jeff Hornacek(Philadelphia 76ers, Utah Jazz) at Rosemont Horizon Stadium in 1982. Andre did also attend Lindblom Technical High School for 2 years prior to joining Carver High School. This was acknowledged as one of the highest rated, predominantly African American, academic public schools in the State of Illinois. Potential students had to take a test and pass in order to be admitted into the school.

2. College career

Andre attended Loyola University Chicago and helped lead the Ramblers team to NCAA Sweet 16 in 1985. They were defeated by Georgetown led by NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing. In this game Andre scored an impressive 20 points against the Hall of Famer gaining further National attention. Andre was also voted to the Ramblers team of the Decade following a stellar college career. In his Senior Year at Loyola Andre was the Horizon League Men’s Player of the Year with averages of 20.6 pts per game, 12.4 rebounds per game and 3 Blocks Per Game. Loyola played in the Midwestern City Conference, now known as the Horizon League.

3. Professional career

In 1987, after decorated college career, Andre suited up for the Philadelphia Aces in the Summer Pro League, previously called the USBL(United States Basketball League). This league was full of prospects hoping to make the jump to the NBA.

In 1987 Andre Moore was Drafted to the NBA early in the second Round by the Denver Nuggets. He was the 31st Pick Overall and considered unlucky to miss the first round given a stellar college career. The 87 Draft Class included future NBA Legends such as David Robinson, Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, Reggie Miller, Kevin Johnson and Reggie Lewis. Andre was signed by the Denver Nuggets and was later Traded to the Milwaukee Bucks after spending the full preseason and start of the season with Nuggets.

After his stint in the NBA, Andre headed overseas for the first time ever to play for the Lliria Basketball Club in a little village located about 50 km’s outside of Valencia, Spain. Andre then also briefly played with another club located in Bilbao, Spain. This is a mountainous region just outside of France. After a successful season in in Spain with season averages of 20 points per game and 12 Rebounds per game, Andre returned to the US and in mid 1989 he decided to have one last run at returning the NBA via playing in the CBA. The Continental Basketball League, at the time was the major feeder league for the NBA. CBA teams were generally located in obscure little towns outside major NBA cities. Andre played for the Tulsa Fastbreaker’s(Oklahoma). This team was coached by Henry Bibby(Former NBA guard who also played with Dr J and the Philadelphia 76ers, also the father of current NBA star Mike Bibby). The Fastbreaker’s were the defending champions of the league at the time. The regular CBA season consisted of about 50 games but after only 10 games into this season Andre was presented with an opportunity that would change his life forever. His Tulsa team was playing against Kansa City, Missouri, and unbeknownst to him the coaching staff from the Australia based Brisbane Bullets were at the game scouting the power forward from the Kansas team. At the time the Bullets would normally go to the US each off season scouting possible imports and the Kansas player had been recommended for one of their 2 import positions. As fate would have it, Andre was matched up against this power forward and Tulsa would end up beating Kansas convincingly with Andre personally dominating the match up. The Bullets coaching staff immediately turned their focus on Andre for their import position. Andre was then notified of the Bullets interest by coach Bibby. Andre would later reveal that his immediate thought was “they play basketball in Crocodile Dundee’s Country?” Andre then began to do some research on Australia and more importantly Brisbane and liked what he saw with the weather being warm all year round and beaches on the Gold and Sunshine Coast’s, a big change from his days growing up in Chicago. From a Basketball standpoint, the Bullets looked great on paper with the Legendary Leroy Loggins already an established star and household name and fellow 1990 import recruit Derek Rucker(Son of NFL star Reggie Rucker) also set to join the team. After one month Andre packed his bags and headed to Australia in January 1990. These three players formed arguably the most dominate trio in league history in 1990, all three gaining 1st Team All Star Status.

The move to the Bullets was the start of a long and successful career in Australia with Andre making Brisbane his home. Andre enjoyed immediate success playing with Bullets helping lead them to the 1990 NBL Grand Final where they were just beaten 2 games to 1 by the Perth Wildcats. Andre had a huge impact both on and off the court in 1990. He along with Leroy Loggins and Derek Rucker had helped turn the Bullets Franchise around after a disappointing season in 1989 where the club failed to reach the finals for the first time in several seasons. Andre was the much needed Big Man the club had been chasing and replaced the disappointing Winston Crite. Andre was a 1st Team All NBL selection in 1990 and also represented the Bullets in the Annual All Star Game where he and Derek Rucker starred. Andre’s personal stat line in 1990 was amazing having averages of 26.9 points per game, 12.60 rebounds per game and 2 Blocks per game. All this while shooting at an amazing 61.1% from the field. To this day this would be considered the most dominate display by a big man in the Bullets History. Off the court Andre also won the Prestigious Vince Hickey Memorial Award. This awarded to the player with the most significant contribution to the community. This is one of Andre Moore’s proudest achievements.

Andre continued to play for the Brisbane Bullets until the end of the 1994 season. The Bullets made the play offs in all but one season during this 5 year period. He would continue to be the best Bullets Big Man during this period and played in numerous NBL All Star games. He is arguably the most dominate Big Man in the Bullets History and led the team in rebounding and blocked shots for 5 straight seasons.

In 1995 Andre continued his NBL career with a one season stint with the Hobart Tassie Devils. Again he led this young team in rebounding and provided much needed experience. He was also awarded with the Teams Co MVP for this season. Andre retired after this season but continued to live and work in Australia after returning to Brisbane.

In 1999/2000 Andre was recruited out of retirement by the Cairns Taipains for the clubs inaugural season. Andre played two seasons with this club and provided veteran experience this new franchise required. After the 2000/2001 season Andre retired from NBL after playing for 3 clubs and 8 seasons. Andre Moore is considered as one of the most successful imports to play in the NBL having 6 consecutive seasons as an import in a league where most imports struggle to survive past the first initial season.

In 2002 Andre suited up for the Kuiyam Pride also based in Cairns. This was for the first ever indigenous run professional basketball team in Australia.

4. After Basketball

Andre still continues to play basketball to this day locally. He is a 3 time Medalist at the World Master Games picking 2 Gold Medals and 1 Silver. The World Masters Games is an Olympic like event for athletes over 30 years of age and actually has more participants than the Olympics. He has competed in Edmonton, Canada(2005) and Sydney, Australia(2009) in these events. Andre is also a 6 time Gold Medalist at the Pan Pacific Master games held on the Gold Coast.

Andre is also the founder of the Andre Moore Big Feat Basketball and Mentoring Experience. The program is designed to empower people to have a healthy body and a healthy mind. Andre has delivered this program to over 5,000 schools and communities over the past 20 years. This program was established by Andre as he wanted to give back to the community that supported him over the years.

Andre Moore starred in a TV show with childhood hero Julius “Dr J” Erving called Time Trax filmed in Brisbane, Australia in 1994.

Andre won a Pancake Tossing Competition at the Iconic Pancake Manor in Brisbane in 1992.

Andre became a Naturalised Australian in 1996 and notes this as a very proud moment being a dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia. Unfortunately due to changes in NBL rules Andre was unable to compete as an Australian for a further 3 years.

First ever player with NBA experience to play in the CBA(Australia). This is the league below the NBL.

Second ever player to record a quadruple double in the CBA – 30points, 15 rebounds, 10 blocks and 10 assists.

CBA Teams included the Toowoomba Mountaineers, Brisbane Brewers and the Cairns Marlins which led to an NBL comeback with the Cairns Taipains.

Andre is happily married and has 7 beautiful children who are all talented in one way or another. Andre’s beautiful wife was born in Eritrea, Africa. His eldest son is a promising basket baller himself. He is only 16 years old but already stands 6ft 6 with exceptional ball handling skills for a bigger guy and great leaping ability. He has both on and off the court smarts. His older sister is 19 and also a great ball player herself and provided him with the inspiration to play hard when he hits the court. Andre’s younger children are dancers(ballet, jazz and hip hop) aspiring actors, basket ballers and promising track and field athletes. Andre’s children names and ages below – as at April 2012.
