The second season of the IPL coincided with multi-phase 2009 Indian general elections, the Indian Central Government refused to provide security, stating that security forces would be strained safeguarding both the IPL and the elections. As a result, the BCCI decided to host the second season of the league outside India.[1]

The third season of IPL started in India on 12 March 2010 and is due to last over a period of 45 days.[2] Five new venues, Cuttack, Nagpur, Ahmedabad and Dharamsala, have been added[3][4]. Other changes include removal of icon players[5] and granting permission to players who were involved in the Indian Cricket League to play in the tournament.[6]
