Hussein A. Abbass

Hussein Abbass (born 1969) is an Australian Professor of Computer Science, specialising in Artificial Intelligence. Hussein is a Fellow of the IEEE, ACS, ORS, and IML. He is currently working at the University of New South Wales, Canberra, Australia. His research interest includes Artificial Intelligence, Human-Swarm Teaming[1], Trusted Autonomy[2], and Shepherding[3].

Early Career

Hussein spent his childhood in Cairo, Egypt. After completing two Bachelor Degrees, a post-graduate Diploma in Operations Research, and a Masters with a thesis title: Constraint Logic Programming in the Frame of Goal Programming, from Cairo University. After graduating in 1990 and completing his National Service in 1992, he Joined Sono Cairo as a Computer System Administrator, with responsibilities of managing the Unix system and designing and developing software applications written in COBOL, C, Visual Basic, and Oracle DB SQL. He commenced his PhD in 1995 working on Intelligent Decision Support Systems. After obtaining a Chevening Scholarship, he moved to Scotland and in 1997, he completed a Master in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh, with a thesis entitled: An Intelligent Tool for Process Synthesis[4]. In 1998, he moved to Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia and completed a PhD entitled: Computational intelligence techniques for decision making: with applications to the dairy industry[5].

Academic Career in Australia

In 2000, Hussein took up a Lecture position at University of New South Wales in Canberra, (UNSW-Canberra). He was promoted to Senior Lecturer (2002), Associate Professor (2005) and to a Full Professor and Chair of IT (2007)[6]. Between 2005 and 2010, Hussein was the Executive Director of the Defence and Security Applications Research Centre at UNSW-Canberra.

Notable Services to the Academic Community

Hussein was the Vice-President for Technical Activities of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (2016-2019) and the National President for the Australian Society for Operational Research (2016-2019). He was a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts (2013-2015) and a member of the ARC, Mathematics, Information and Communication, Excellence of Research Australia in 2010; the first Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) panel.
