Professional Life edit

In 1987, bestselling author Don Brown entered active duty at the Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island. There, he won the prestigious “New York City Bar Association Trial Advocacy Award,” awarded to the winner of the Navy Justice School’s trial advocacy competition.

Brown then received orders to the Naval Legal Service Office (NLSO) at the 32nd Street Naval Station in San Diego. Within a year, he was rated not only as the top Navy prosecutor in San Diego, but also as the highest rated lieutenant among approximately twenty-seven officers at the NLSO.

After two and a half years, Brown was reassigned to the United States Attorney’s Office in downtown San Diego, where he became a Special Assistant United States Attorney.

From there, Brown was assigned to the Pentagon, working in the JAG’s Administrative Law Division, where he authored legal opinions to the Secretary of the Navy concerning a variety of officer personnel matters. Brown is one of a very small number of naval officers ever to have been inside the offices of the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy, and to actually see the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Commandant of the Marine Corps in person. During this time, he also published an article in the U.S. Naval Law Review and completed the nonresident course in International Law from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

Very few officers in the JAG Corps have had the opportunity to (1) serve with the U.S. Attorney, or (2) serve in the Pentagon, or (3) be published in the Naval Law Review. Brown experienced all three.

In 1992, Brown left active duty to pursue private practice with a large law firm in the Charlotte area. He established his own firm in 1996, leading to the formation of Brown & Associates, PLLC. He remained in the Naval Reserve, on an inactive status through 1999, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
