My Project

edit

Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, U.S.A.

Being a fan of the American crocodile, I decided to find some sort of stub that discussed the crocodile. Upon finding some stubs with the animal, I decided to expand on the stub Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife refuge is located on the southern end of Florida. I would like to discuss such topics as the dangers of extinction, the impact on the county and/or state, the type of funding, and who's involved in this preserve. I should be able to find information about how this refuge "runs" and how the American crocodile is/is not benefiting in this effort. Hopefully, by the time I'm ready to write my draft, I'll know the 'ins and outs, ups and downs' of the national refuge. There are many other types of national refuges and wildlife preserves in Florida (such as Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge) that have articles, except that there really aren't any about the American crocodile in Florida and its refuge. So I plan to give one of my favorite animals the recognition it deserves! I plan to name my article Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

Thoughts from Josh. Andy, this sounds like a good project. The fact that it is a national wildlife refuge means there should be enough information out there for you to write a good research paper, but not always. You will have a better sense of that after you begin your research. Remember, your final article needs to be 1500-2000 words of concise encyclopedic material. Will you be able to find references other than the Fish & Wildlife Service's website? Remember to keep your focus on the article itself and not on material about Crocodiles in general, which belongs over in that article. If you have any questions about your project proposal, write me a note here, and write "QUESTION FOR JOSH" in the edit summary box when you hit the "save page" button. I'll stop by later to answer. If you have general questions about wikipedia, keep asking them over at my talk page, as they may be of help to other classmates.1013-josh 21:12, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Workshop Guidelines

  • Questions:
What kinds of information does the article NOT have?
Is the way it's presented make sense? Should I move sections/images around?
What are some ideas or things that I should add to the article?
Do I use a neutral point of view?
Is it easy to understand and read?

Hi, I've nominated an article you worked on, Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the "hook" for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created on April 27 where you can improve it if you see fit. 1013-josh 22:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey Andy, I read your article and looked it over for grammar and spelling, i changed a couple of things, but overall it was good. I think you picked a great topic that people want know alot about and that's good. As far a your article i think it's organozed well, and the pictures add alot of depth to the article. You are on a great start and with a little more work you will have a great wikipedia article. I'm going to continue to check your page to see if you added anything and run through and if i run across any information i will be sure to let you know. Again great start!!!1013-precious 03:43, 2 May 2007 (UTC)1013-precious 03:57, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

This is a very strong article that is also nicely packaged. You convey a lot of information in a small space, and the article has a concise, encyclopedic tone that serves it well. You've taken care to cite sources appropriately, and I think the infobox and photos are excellent features (although I might call it a photo gallery, rather than an art gallery). I found the history of the site formation's (accidental habitat created by dredge spoil) very interesting, and I think this is one area you could expand, if you are able to find sources about the dedication of the national wildlife refuge and the political debate that inevitably surrounds such actions. I would also be interested to hear more about the crocodiles themselves in the "activities" section. If this is one of the three largest breeding populations, shouldn't we know a little bit here about how many crocodiles there are at the site and what is being done to facilitate their success? The article needs a copy-edit (particularly) toward the bottom, and footnotes should be moved outside the periods. You can also do more wikilinking throughout. Other than expanding content as appropriate, I think you're close to done here. Is there a way to rewrite the "Current News as of Spring 2007" section so that it's not soon outdated? 1013-josh 19:56, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

You're on the Main Page!

Hi Andy, your article was featured on the Main Page of Wikipedia in the "Did You Know?" fact box for 6+ hours this morning. You may have had some strangers stopping by your article as a result, so check the page history. 1013-josh 17:36, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Homework

edit
  • Working on Assignment #2. 1013-andy 17:10, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Finished with Assignment #2. Look at the article entitled King Kong 2005 and scroll down to a section labeled "Sountrack". My sentence is the last sentence. 1013-andy 05:25, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
Good work with the edit. Remember to add a comment to the edit summary box to make it easier for other users to follow your changes. And you probably shouldn't mark it as "minor" when you add a full new sentence. You may want to add the film page to your watchlist so you can see what becomes of your changes. Your sentence is likely to be changed because it represents opinion and doesn't conform to "Wikipedia style." You should strive to write in a neutral "encyclopedia" voice, as defined here: Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. 1013-josh 06:00, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
My mistake. You did add a comment to the edit summary, and it showed up successfully. Check the page history to see. (Although, again, you probably shouldn't mark a full sentence as "minor.")
  • Finished with Assignment #3. I do consent to both the copyright and privacy agreements for Wikipedia. 1013-andy 04:04, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Okay, great! Let me know at any time if you change your mind and would like to switch to an off-line research assignment. 1013-josh 07:30, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Working on Assignment #4. 1013-andy 16:49, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Finished with Assignment #4. Find it at my draft page. 1013-andy 04:25, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
Great work. Use sections and subsections to separate content, rather than bold text. 1013-josh 18:49, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey Andy, You're quick! Your new headers are one size two big, though. The standard header is ==Header==. 1013-josh 21:28, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Working on Assignment #5. 1013-andy 19:48, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Good work. I think you're ready to transfer over to the mainspace. I prepped your draft for the move -- added a class template + copied the florida keys template and categories from the stub article -- and tomorrow I'll help you move yours to the real page. 1013-josh 07:26, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Working on Assignment #6. 1013-andy 19:41, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Finished with Weekend part of Assignment #6. 1013-andy 05:55, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Done with Contribution Week edits Assignment #6. 1013-andy 06:49, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Notes from Josh & the Class

edit

Hey Andy, I have no idea how that contents box showed up. I assume you just get a certain number of headings and it is created automatically.1013-Dan 15:12, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

That is correct. After you have three sections, the TOC is generated automatically. See here.↔NMajdantalk 21:20, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I just posted some helpful research links; don't miss them! 1013-josh 21:35, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Andy, I think you're working on notes and references for your group, yes? References should be alphabetized. This is the main rationale for repeating the notes information in the references section, and without it there's not much reason to separate the sections: See Wikipedia:Citing sources#Maintaining a separate "References" section in addition to "Notes"

Interviews

edit

I noticed in your draft you said you planned on conducting interviews. You should be aware we have a decided policy on Wikipedia:No original research in writing articles. Your interview subjects may direct you to printed sources from the organization etc., but you cannot cite any facts from the interview itself, which would not be verifiable. Thanks for understanding.--Pharos 15:37, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

American Crocodile

edit

An image has to exist before it can be displayed in an article. Try [[Image:Crocodylus acutus mexico 01.jpg|thumb|American Crocodile in [[Jalisco]], [[Mexico]]]]; it will look like the main photo in the American Crocodile article. --Geniac 17:17, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, just noticed you uploaded one to use. You have to use the full filename:
Image:American Crocodile in water.JPG
instead of just
Image:American Crocodile.JPG
--Geniac 17:20, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

To change the image display size from the default, add a px part (ie. pixel width). For example:

Image:American Crocodile in water.JPG|thumb|220px|right|Photo Courtesy of [http://www.fws.gov U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service]

--Geniac 17:42, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

You wrote: "Is there anyway I could make a link in my article to go to a slideshow of other pictures..." - I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean a slideshow of pictures set up on a website somewhere, or of pictures uploaded to Wikipedia? If the latter, you could make a gallery if you intend to show lots of images. See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial#Photo gallery. --Geniac 17:46, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Preview

edit

It is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, see how things look before you save them, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. --Geniac 17:54, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

edit

The gallery code you have is correctly formatted, I am using a PC and I can see all the photos. So I don't know what the problem is, sorry. Try asking at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). By the way, I noticed American_Crocodile_-5.JPG is the same as American_Crocodile_-1.JPG ... was that intentional? --Geniac 14:55, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

On 3 May, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.
