M5/New Westfield Lock edit
@Bob1960evens I saw you changed the new lock required at the M5 (lock 9a) to New Westfield Lock, has the name been decided yet? ElectronicsForDogs (talk) 07:24, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
- @ElectronicsForDogs John Pontefract, the volunteer manager for the Stroudwater Navigation, stated that it would be known as New Westfield Lock when he was interviewed by Paul Whitewick (at about 3:55). Style niggle edit
It seems that in this template, all words for canal bits are capitalised: "Bridge", "Lock", "Slipway" etc. This does not happen in the main article, so is there a real reason for it? Imaginatorium (talk) 09:12, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
- Good point. Also seems to be the case for Template:Thames and Severn Canal map, Template:Gloucester and Sharpness Canal map, and (just to give an example of one I definitely haven't edited!) Template:Regent's Canal map. Is this just the established convention or something more formal about capitalisation of names? ElectronicsForDogs (talk) 10:45, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
- Cotswold Canals Trust do this in their source material, e.g. [1]https://www.cotswoldcanals.net/whitminster-lock ElectronicsForDogs (talk) 10:47, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
- It is a convention that is also used by the Ordnance Survey on their mapping. For something like Ryeford Lock, lock could I suppose be spelt with a lower case L, because Ryeford is a place, but for Pike Lock, Pike is not a place, and the lock is formally known as Pike Lock, so lock has a capital L. For consistency, Ryeford Lock also has a capital L, because that is what is is formally known as. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:14, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
- Right, but my point is that in the article itself (Thames and Severn Canal), the locks, bridges and whatnot, are lowercase. This creates a different inconsistency. I don't see any point in a big fuss about this, if - for example - there is consistency across the canal articles, with lowercase in articles, capitals on the maps. - I have just read through the Thames and Severn Canal article, and when locks and bridges are referred to by their formal name, they use title case. The only exception seems to be the A419 Dudbridge Road bridge, which is a fairly recent road, and the bridge does not have a formal name on the OS map. However, it is referred to as Dudbridge Road Bridge on the Cotswold Canals website, so I have changed it for consistency. Bob1960evens (talk) 23:52, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
