Outdated advice for punctuation differences

"This template is not for simple punctuation differences – use {{R from modification}} instead."

However, {{R from modification}} seems to be deprecated in mainspace except for the specific case of rearranged words; it says, "Please note that there are many more specific templates. Please use {{R from alternative spelling}} for spelling changes (including punctuation and spacing)..."

{{R from alternative spelling}} itself states (emphasis mine), "At present, {{R from alternative hyphenation}}, {{R from alternative punctuation}}, and {{R from alternative spacing}} all redirect to this template and feed into the same maintenance category. This is likely to change in the future, so please use the more specific template names."

The template instructions say: >> Note that if the target page is named using WP:COMMONNAME, then this template should not be here.

What does this mean? The point is to redirect to a page that uses the common name instead of a slang or colloquial name, so that is going to be the typical case. What does it then mean to say "this template should not be here"??05:24, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

I think the template text explains this: this is for redirects from "an unofficial name that is more commonly used than the official name". So if the target page uses the common name then other rcats should be used, such as {{R from alternative name}}. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 12:06, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
