Proposed merger with Template:Infobox family name edit

Please review Template talk:Infobox family name. Chicbyaccident (talk) 08:16, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Merge completed. PPEMES (talk) 11:19, 5 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

What? edit

How.. can a surname.. be of a specific gender? What??? Bataaf van Oranje (talk) 13:12, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Generally happens with patronymics. M: Sobieski, F: Sobieska or Sobieskaya. M: Gudmudsson, F: Gudmundsdottir. M: mac Cuindlaes, F: nhic (or nighean mhic) Chuindlaes (might have misspelled that last; my Gaelic is hardly fluent).  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  12:38, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Merge work edit

I started tentatively trying to merge Template:Infobox family name and Template:Infobox surname, but stopped. It's unclear what parameters are desired to be retained. Some of them seem at cross purposes, e.g. |gender= versus |feminine= / |masculine=. And what is the |family= for? And so on. How do you want this sectionally arraged. E.g., should there be a heading above |motto= and |clans=? Etc., etc.

I need a list, basically.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  12:41, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help! I'm afraid I don't quite understand your question. With your technical skills, I suppose you are free to accomplish the merge according to your personal perception of the discussion. Please proceed, and any additional needs could be added later from the deciprated template, right? Chicbyaccident (talk) 13:01, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well, other people who know more about the exact intent of various parameters may have some input. There is no deadline, and I'm very wary (and weary of infobox-related disputes, for good reason and long history; people fight about few things on WP with such ferocity as they do about infoboxes. If no one cares after several days I'll just do what seems to make the most sense and hope it doesn't blow up in my face.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  23:33, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I was the one who initiated the merge proposal, which then gained support and a positive decision. Therefore I per WP:BOLD encourage you to proceed per WP:BOLD. Chicbyaccident (talk) 12:43, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@SMcCandlish: Would you mind finishing this merge as well, along with emptying and redirecting the depricated template? Chicbyaccident (talk) 17:45, 28 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I can try looking into it again, but no one responded to my request for clarification on what parameters should be retained where they conflict, or even what some of the parameters are for. What does a template for family names have a |family= parameter?  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  01:52, 29 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've asked WikiProject Biography for some input.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  02:10, 29 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • @SMcCandlish: I believe this is ready to complete. I added |region= and |footnotes= fields from Infobox_family_name and updated the documentation. I've AWB'd all uses of that deprecated template, replacing |language=, |related names= and |clans= with |languageorigin=, |variant= and |family= respectively. Issues still to resolve are whether to remove the gender-related parameters, adding |motto=, and perhaps copying over the styling of Infobox_family_name - but none of those impact closing the merge directly. -- Netoholic @ 09:54, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Good job! For the record, I would support emulating the style of Template:Infobox family. By the way a template which also needs a merge finishing. Chicbyaccident (talk) 10:58, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
