This link for Charlie Joiner doesn't seem to work. I notice that {{Infobox NFL player}} supports two url formats and take either "nfl" or "nflnew" parameters. Similar support should be added here.—Bagumba (talk) 21:48, 7 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

For example, it appears that the URL http://databasefootball.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=GRIESBOB01 generates an HTTP 301 (Moved Permanently) redirect to http://www.rotowire.com?ilkid=GRIESBOB01 which generates another HTTP 301 redirect to https://www.rotowire.com/?ilkid=GRIESBOB01. Furthermore, it appears that the content of the page at https://www.rotowire.com/?ilkid=GRIESBOB01 is equivalent to the content of the RotoWire.com home page. Basically, the databasefootball.com player URL does not lead to a page about the specific player.

For improving this situation, there are several possibilities. One option might be to simply remove the DatabaseFootball.com link from the template output. Another possible option is to have the template generate a link to an archived DatabaseFootball.com page. In particular, it might be possible to generate a link such as https://web.archive.org/web/http://databasefootball.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid={{{dbf}}} instead of the current link http://databasefootball.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid={{{dbf}}}. However, my understanding is that links to archived pages are discouraged in the case of an article's External links section. In addition, there might be a question as to what archived copy should be used. (For example, https://web.archive.org/web/http://databasefootball.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=ALWORLAN01 redirects to an archived copy of the RotoWire.com home page.) Linking to Wikidata

Is it possible to link this template to Wikidata to automatically fetch links that are already located there? ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:12, 26 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
