This template needs

  • | link alias-football = American Samoa national association football team

so   American Samoa and American Samoa   do not link to a redirect page. --Theurgist (talk) 03:20, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not done: There is nothing inherently wrong with linking to redirects. Anomie 03:32, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but this template is transcluded on many pages already and will be transcluded on future pages as well, and visitors might assume that someone has forgotten to take care of the template after renaming the article about the team (that's exactly what I assumed, FWIW). Other "country data" templates are supplied with the "link alias-football" parametre and this one will get consistent with them if it has it too, and even though United States national football team is a disambiguation and Canada national football team describes a team competing in a different sport, I think a minor aesthetic change would do absolutely no harm. --Theurgist (talk) 03:53, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The American Samoa national association football team article also transcludes the template. It is there in the table at the "World Cup qualification record" section; that table will soon be expanded with two more rows as the team has two forthcoming games scheduled for later this week. The article essentially contains numerous links to itself, but technically those links are redirects, and so "American Samoa" appears as a blue link and not as boldface plain text, and if one follows this link to see what article it opens, one finds oneself at the top of the very same page. Templates like {{Japan topics}} or {{Time topics}} are not usually expected to contain redirects because it would otherwise be confusing not to have the link to the page you're currently in any different from all other links, and also the actual article title can be seen in the hover box in the cases of piped links ({{fb}} by rule produces piped links). I feel there is no reason not to make use of the "link alias-football" parametre. That's all that optional parametres are for - they provide templates with greater variability and applicability. I'm therefore re-activating "editprotected", and I'm alerting that the very same issue applies for {{Country data Samoa}} and Samoa national association football team. --Theurgist (talk) 04:57, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
There is nothing inherently wrong with redirects, but there are often updated on templates. Having said that, the change does not seem to have had any effect on the examples you give at the top. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:07, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, not sure if this is the proper place to make this request regarding how this template works but here's the issue:

Spartan008 (talk) 13:41, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Basically the |link alias-football= parameter is overriding input from other templates. If you remove it, the link would be built from the |alias= and |altvar= parameters instead, which would fix instances of both {{fbw}} and {{fbu}}. Good code is ready to be copied from /sandbox and examples are up in /testcases. — Bility (talk) 17:56, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also, per the discussion above, yes the template would now create redirects to the men's national article, but as stated above, there is nothing wrong with redirects. It's actually the naming of the article (addition of the word "association") which doesn't seem to be standard as opposed to the template. At any rate, when they implemented that "fix" to get rid of a redirect, it broke other templates, so I guess you just need to revert that change. — Bility (talk) 18:04, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Bility that the most elegant solution is to simply revert the change. If we must avoid redirects, the code would be | link alias-football = American Samoa {{{age|}}} {{{mw|}}} national association football team Please note I haven't tested this. —WFC19:31, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Question about templates. The United States country data template is having the parametre activated this way exactly and yet is capable of displaying links to both national teams. Couldn't this one be adjusted in the same way? --Theurgist (talk) 22:22, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
If it's used, redirects would have to be created at American Samoa women's national association football team and American Samoa under-23 national association football team. The whole point of the |link alias-football= parameter was to avoid redirects, so it's lost its purpose. Since the redirects to American Samoa national association football team already exist, just reverting the addition of |link alias-football= causes the least amount of subsequent work. — Bility (talk) 22:33, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hadn't realised that the national team names were different. That needs to be sorted out at WT:FOOTY, but in the meantime reverting the previous change is by far the best option. —WFC23:26, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I left a note at WT:FOOTY#Question about templates that they should standardize the article names, but pending those changes I think this request should be acted on to fix the broken template usages. When they get the names set, then we can put in a permanent fix if need be. — Bility (talk) 00:21, 16 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

On the testcases, I see that when the under 23 team is required it generates a red link American Samoa national under-23 football team. Surely this should be fixed before making the change live. Tra (Talk) 03:30, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
No, those articles don't exist yet. See Template:Football in American Samoa. — Bility (talk) 03:50, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
In that case, yeah, a red link would be the correct output.   Done Tra (Talk) 05:12, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Okay, the American Samoa football articles have all been named consistently ("association" added in) and new code is in the sandbox that should allow all the football templates to produce direct links to the articles. Thanks, — Bility (talk) 17:28, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please copy the sandbox version to live. I've fixed the football parameter. Here are some examples:
{{fb|American Samoa}}  American Samoa (incorrect wikilink)
{{fb|American Samoa/sandbox}}  American Samoa (correct wikilink)
{{fbwu|17|American Samoa}}  American Samoa (incorrect wikilink)
{{fbwu|17|American Samoa/sandbox}}  American Samoa (correct wikilink)

Description of suggested change: Following page move of American Samoa national football team, could the template be update to link to American Samoa men's national football team similar to how it has been done with United States? I believe that adding the text I've indicated below would be sufficient.

|link alias-football = American Samoa {{{mw|men's}}} national {{{age|}}} football team Stevie fae Scotland (talk) 16:04, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
