Template talk:British flags

Latest comment: 16 years ago by Padraig

The Union Flag represents the territory, therefore the use of an outdated map image is WP:POV and WP:OR.--padraig 18:01, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Astrotrain, your new image is just as WP:POV and WP:OR as the first one, and as these are all regarded as British territorys by you what is wrong with the Union Flag.--padraig 19:51, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's not original research as all the flags are real and taken from the respective flagicons on wikipedia- not POV as flags.net lists each flag as the respective subnational flag. Please stop edit warring on this issue. Astrotrain 20:00, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your flags.net states its an Unofficial flag, and besides that is a commercial site, the Union Flag represents all the sub-nations after all the template is British Flags, you are deliberately trying to provoke an edit war with the use of this and the first image.--padraig 20:05, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I know that it is unofficial (indeed I remember adding in an unofficial section in List of Northern Irish flags only for you and your banned friend to remove it stating OR!!!!). I would rather not edit war, but I don't see the need to censor flag images on a flag page!! Astrotrain 20:09, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Your are the main cause of edit wars on this issue, the use of the Ulster Banner conveys a status to the banner it dosen't have, the Union Flag is neutral in this template.--padraig 20:14, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
It is the unofficial flag as you just said above and this is a flags page. You really need to learn to compromise to reach consensus in order to end these edit wars. Astrotrain 20:19, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Astrotrain it is against WP policy to allow WP:POV and WP:OR there is no compromise on that.--padraig 21:04, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia works on consensus Padraig, if are not prepared to work with other editors I suggest you refrain from editing these pages. Otherwise, please work with your fellow editors to get a suitable version. I will look at other possible images to use. Remember that this is a flag page and it is acceptable to use flag images. The Ulster Banner is not the Flag of Northern Ireland the Union Flag is the map is wrong. --Barryob Vigeur de dessus 12:04, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

As Padraig confirms above, it is the unofficial flag Astrotrain 12:20, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Astrotrain don't try and twist what I said, the Ulster Banner cannot be included in the image as that is WP:POV and WP:OR.--padraig 12:31, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I suggest you read those pages yourself and you will find it is neither of those things. In any case, I will try another compromise by including other unofficial flags that the British government "don't recognise" (what ever that means!). This one includes the Cornish flag, British Army Ensign, Royal Navy Ensign etc... Astrotrain 20:34, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Astrotrain the British government does recognise the English, Scottish and Welsh flags it just dosent legisate on their useage.--padraig 20:36, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
What has that got to do with anything- this is not a British government website Astrotrain 20:38, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
No its an encyclopeadia which is suppose to present up todate facts, no an image that is 34 years out of date, the template is of British flags of which the Union Flag is the Official flag of.--padraig 20:42, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Again

edit

Astrotrain, stop changing the image from the Union Flag to other images that include the Ulster Banner, that flag is defunct and cannot be used in this infobox.--Padraig (talk) 10:21, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

The flag is still used in an unofficial manner (unofficial in this case refering to use by non central government usage). Astrotrain (talk) 14:06, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Provide WP:RS for its use outside of sport, until then refrain from WP:OR.--Padraig (talk) 18:59, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Again Astrotrain is trying to use a POV and OR image the Ulster Banner is not a British Flag, it is historical.--Padraig (talk) 15:34, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Flag list

edit

I added the List of Cornish flags, and centered the text on the lists, I also reduced the width of the infobox slightly.--padraig 09:30, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

A few comments.
  1. I think, whilst this is being discussed, the Union Flag (per Padraig's recent commit with commit message "add List of Cornish flags") is more neutral (if less descriptive) than the image with multiple flags, and should probably be used in the interim.
  2. Why on earth has List of Cornish flags been added? It is no more a separate constituent country than Kirkcudbrightshire and I'm sure we don't want to add every county or former county.
  3. How come people can spare time to edit war here, but not to participate in the mediation on the request?
