Template talk:British Chancellors of the Exchequer
Titles
editShould the individuals here not be listed by their title when they served as Chancellor of the Exchequer rather than their final title? Most lists of Chancellors will list them by the title they held at the time, and except under extraordinary circumstances, the Chancellor is never a peer. I think this has the potential to confuse. For instance referring to Sir John Anderson as 1st Viscount Waverley is potentially very confusing. If you came across a reference in a book to a Sir John Anderson who was chancellor and were looking for an article on a Chancellor called "Anderson", it is not obvious that Waverley is the individual. Moreover he did not become Viscoutn Waverley until 7 years after he had ceased to be chancellor. The same problem applies to others - it is not obvious that Michael Hicks Beach is 1st Earl St Aldwyn nor that Stafford Northcote is who is referred to here as 1st Earl of Iddesleigh. I really think it would improve navigation if this were changed. Dunarc (talk) 22:59, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
Template:Chancellors of the Exchequer
editAs I have said at Template talk:Chancellors of the Exchequer, the template Template:Chancellors of the Exchequer is very similar to this one and it makes me wonder if we really need both of them? Dunarc (talk) 19:00, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for this. I have redirected this template to the older one. If anyone objects, please feel free to revert and we can discuss on WP:TFD. It is a bit bizarre that two should exist. Looking into this histories, {{Chancellors of the Exchequer}} was created in 2006 and was updated regularly. Then it seems the pretty much identical {{British Chancellors of the Exchequer}} was created in 2019 and for some reason most of the pages linked to {{Chancellors of the Exchequer}} were switched to this template. I don't know why the original template wasn't just updated. --Philip Stevens (talk) 11:39, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
