University of Calcutta

Calcutta University, 1850s–1870s
Calcutta University, 1850s–1870s
  • Comment: This is my 5th DYK nomination.

Improved to Good Article status by ArnabSaha (talk). Self-nominated at 08:58, 31 October 2020 (UTC).

  • I would primarily advocate for the alteration of the primary lead; "that University of Calcutta" indicates the absence of an article, with the correct statement remaining "that the University of Calcutta". — Preceding unsigned comment added by SurenGrig07 (talkcontribs)
General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
  • Cited: Yes - Offline/paywalled citation accepted in good faith
  • Interesting: Yes
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: None required.

Overall: Approving ALT1 only. I think ALT0 would need some work to be approved. For example, "Western-style institution" seems vague. (t · c) buidhe 09:27, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Buidhe, searched for that blog article in wayback machine. but couldn't find any. Also no issues in GA review. It seems like a backward copy. Other than that, I have tried to solve the close paraphrasing. Most of them are names. Here's another ALT (is 'THE' required before university of calcutta as suggested by SurenGrig07?).  Saha ❯❯❯ Stay safe  17:58, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
  • ALT1 only, AGF on the Earwig issue. The problem with ALT2 is again, what is an "occidental institution"? (t · c) buidhe 07:08, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
    • @Buidhe:, I want to summarise this thing "European classics, English literature, European and Indian philosophy and Occidental and Oriental history", which is western style/culture...  Saha ❯❯❯ Stay safe  09:33, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but aside from the reviewer's unfamiliarity with the word Occidental, this hook fact is from the university's own website, and like much of the article, comes across as self-promotional. You have so much information in this article; can you suggest a different hook angle? Yoninah (talk) 23:50, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah:, New ALTs. Also, I want to add epicgenius as co-nominator, as he suggested me these.  Saha ❯❯❯ Stay safe  18:31, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
  • ALT3:... that the exams of University of Calcutta were conducted in the Kolkata Town Hall and at other locations like Maidan using tents due to lack of space? Source: caluniv.ac.in
  • ALT4:... that the University of Calcutta became one of the largest universities in the world by the mid-1970s with 13 colleges under its direct control and more than 150 affiliated colleges and postgraduate faculties. Source: caluniv.ac.in
  • @Yoninah:, It's good. Let's go with this one...  Saha ❯❯❯ Stay safe  07:09, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
  • Thanks. Pinging Buidhe for a review of ALT3a. Yoninah (talk) 13:31, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

ALT3a looks fine to me. (t · c) buidhe 22:46, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
