Sacca-kiriya edit

  • ... that in ancient Indian stories, a person "can bend the cosmic forces to his will" through an "act of truth"? Source: "The idea that one can bend cosmic forces to his will by performing his personal function (vrata, RV 9.112) with perfection seems to be as old as the Rig Veda." (Brown 1968, p.173)
    • ALT1: ...that in an ancient Buddhist story, a prostitute performed a miraculous "act of truth", by the power of her truthfulness? Source: "Now there stood on that very river bank a courtezan named Bindumati, and, when she heard the king's question, she said, 'As for me, I am a courtezan in the city of Pataliputta. I live by my beauty ; my means of subsistence is the lowest. Let the king but behold my Act of Truth.' And she performed an Act of Truth. The instant she performed her Act of Truth that mighty Ganges flowed back upstream with a roar, in the sight of all that mighty throng. ... 'By what power have you caused this mighty Ganges to flow back upstream ?' Said the courtezan, 'By the Power of Truth, your Majesty, have I caused this mighty Ganges to flow back upstream'" (Burlingame 1917, pp.439–40); Source: "When Bindumati, a prostitute, heard that King Asoka wished the river Ganges to flow upstream, she performed an Act of Truth (saccakiriyā). ... The king then asked, "What is that Act of Truth (saccakiriyā)? Please tell me! " Bindumati replied, 'O king! Whoever gives me money, be he a Khattiya, or a Brahmana or a Vessa or a Sudda, I treat them all alike.'" (Kong 2006, pp.103–4)

  • I like the first hook. For the second, I'd suggest a rewording:
  • ALT2: ...that in an ancient Buddhist story, a prostitute described her profession and caused the Ganges to flow upstream in a miraculous "act of truth"?
  • Here's another possible hook:
  • ALT3: ...that the words Buddhist devotees say when offering flowers to a Buddha statue are not a prayer, but an aspirational "act of truth"? Source: quoted on the page: "Though the verse of offering flowers is recited in front of an image of the Buddha, it is not a prayer to the Buddha. Rather, it is an aspiration that is uttered on the basis of the belief in the power of truth utterance." Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 19:54, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
  • I have taken the liberty to renumber the alt hooks to prevent confusion. Alt 3 looks good to me, it is a good catch--interesting and sourced. In Alt 2, ... described her profession ... may not be specific enough, and raise questions.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 07:50, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Independent review of ALT2 and ALT3 needed, because these hooks were proposed by reviewer herself. Rachel Helps (BYU), would you like to change anything before a third person reviews your hooks?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 18:16, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Sorry, I should have clarified; I did the GA review so I'm not sure if I could review the nomination but I wanted to offer some more hook ideas. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 19:00, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Rachel Helps (BYU), you can, that's no problem. But since you have been the one proposing additional (interesting) hooks, those hooks need to reviewed by a third editor. What do you think of my comments?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 20:47, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Sorry User:Farang Rak Tham, I didn't read closely enough to write a useful reply. So with ALT2, I was trying to make your ALT1 more specific and remove the "truth.. truthfulness" repetition. Can you think of a better way to word it? Or we can strike it through and go with one of the others. I'm just not sure how to reword "described her profession." Here's a different way to say it (I added the fact from the source you quoted to the page).:
  • ALT4: ...that in an ancient Buddhist story, prostitute Bindumati said that she lived by her beauty, performing an "act of truth" which caused the Ganges to flow upstream? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 00:58, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Lived by her beauty doesn't really seem to be the point of the story. Anyway, i think we have sufficient hooks now, and can move on once we have an independent final review.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 07:09, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Note to other reviewers: The main hook has already been approved. ALT3 and ALT4 have been proposed by the first reviewer, but have not yet been reviewed by a second reviewer. Personally, I approve of ALT3, but not of ALT4.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 11:19, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Although ALT3 and ALT4 are acceptable for me and do meet the requirements, I still think the original hook is the best here, so let's go with that. Rest of the review per the other reviews, so I'm giving a tick to ALT0. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 12:12, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
