Michael Van Wagenen

edit
  • ... that Michael Van Wagenen is a documentary filmmaker who has created award-winning documentaries on the United States-Mexico borderlands?
  • ALT1 ... that Michael Van Wagenen has created several documentaries on the United States-Mexico borderlands?

Created by Amgisseman(BYU) (talk). Self-nominated at 22:12, 15 June 2016 (UTC).

  • Comment As the awards themselves are not notable, and film awards are legion, I've created a shorter ALT1. Edwardx (talk) 09:53, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Edwardx Thank you for proposing ALT1. It looks good to me! Sorry it took me so long to respond; I have been out of town. Amgisseman(BYU) (talk) 19:23, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
  • I question whether the subject is notable. The three sources do not seem very independent: A list of films from a site that lists films, a CV from his university and an audio interview with the subject. Aymatth2 (talk) 21:05, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Aymatth2, notability is something that cannot be determined here: I suggest you submit the article to AfD if you think it is a clear concern. (At the moment, the article isn't even templated.) Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:45, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
  • The Reviewing guide says we should check for "normal encyclopedic issues". The present version is mainly what the subject has said about himself - an issue. If User:Amgisseman(BYU) can overhaul the article so it mainly records what independent sources have said about the subject, it may well qualify for retention and for DYK. The time consuming AfD route is, to me, a last resort. Aymatth2 (talk) 18:55, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Aymatth2 and BlueMoonset As far as notability goes, under the WP:NACADEMIC criteria, it says that "The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level." The specific award that he received for his documentary Mundo Milagroso has now been put in and cited in the article. I believe that it meets that criteria.
Regarding sources, some of the sources use the author's own writings, but I was hoping they could contribute to the page because they are not self-published, even the interview. One of the other pages is published by a university. I have also added three additional sources that hopefully qualify as being independent. Unfortunately, there are not many articles that offer any biographical information on Wagenen, so I have just been trying to work with what I could find, and I don't know that tn overhaul is possible. Thank you for your concerns and comments, please notify me of what else I can do to improve the article. Amgisseman(BYU) (talk) 19:59, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
The article states that, "Mundo Milagroso was awarded the Gold Apple from the National Educational Film and Video Festival". As we don't even have an article on either the NEFVF or the Gold Apple, "highly prestigious" seems improbable. Edwardx (talk) 20:29, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
  • The awards are not impressive. A person is notable if several independent sources (not employers) have written about them in some depth, or have at least written about their work in some depth if the article is mainly about their work. I do not see evidence of that in the present version. An article should mainly present an independent view of the subject. We have to be picky about articles on living people highlighted in DYK, perhaps especially picky with articles written for pay. Aymatth2 (talk) 22:10, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Okay. Thanks for looking at the article anyway. Just remove the article from being considered for DYK. Amgisseman(BYU) (talk) 22:24, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
