great article - very nearly there -

  • Sourcing: Unless I missed something (and correct me if I have), the section of the article immediately cited by the source (Hawaiian Airlines magazine) says he became the first Native Hawaiian to play college football in the college's [Oberlin] first football team, however, the hook says he was the first to play on any college football team. The source could probably support either one but the hook and article need to be reconciled.
  • Hook: is interesting and of correct length
  • NPOV: article is NPOV, as is hook
  • Length: article is 1500+ characters
  • Newness: article moved to mainspace same day as nomination
  • Plagiarism: Earwig indicates "Violation Unlikely"
  • QPQ: done - Template:Did you know nominations/100th Brigade (United Kingdom)
  • Image: image is out-of-copyright (1892)

@DarjeelingTea: I think you are reading in to too much of my sentence which tries to link the article for football team, mention his attendance at the college and the claim into one sentence. The thought is he was the first Hawaiian to play football and he played in that schools football team. I added a comma before in.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:52, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
KAVEBEAR thanks, the addition of the comma resolves the issue. This looks good to go now. DarjeelingTea (talk) 10:06, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
  • @KAVEBEAR: I am not happy to promote this. The hook claim has three citations, one of which is offline, but the only one I can see which mentions the "first" claim states "becoming likely the first Native Hawaiian to play collegiate football in America". So the "first Native Hawaiian" claim is a possibility/probability rather than a fact. I think you need a different hook. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:22, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
The third source states "John Henry Wise, former territorial senator, pastor and creator of the Hawaiian Home Lands Commission legislation, also was the first-ever Native Hawaiian to play college football". In my opinion, the addition of "likely" just reflects the over-cautiousness of the writer (Ronald William) in that source and the second "offline" source (it's actually linked not offline). The common consensus is that he is the first (as far as we know). Additional sources: [1] [2] [3]. Can we just add "likely" to the hook then?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:15, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
  • Having been assured that the third source fully supports the claim, I will restore the tick. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:40, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
