Emanoil Băleanu edit

Băleanu in 1831
Băleanu in 1831
  • ... that the citizens of Târgoviște put a jinx on boyar Emanoil Băleanu (pictured), which was seen as fulfilled when his wife died in childbirth? De aceea moșie nimeni nu s-a putut apropia ("When young Manolache Băleanu was taken to the [princely] court by Kirkireu, Prince Soutzos made him grow a [boyar's] beard and gave him his daughter, Lady Catinca, in marriage, providing her with ownership of Târgoviște city. And that is when the Târgoviște folk rose up all as one, [...] went to Saint Nicholas the Poor Church on Victoriei Street and, after mass, all heading into the yard with torches of yellow wax, threw them into a tar barrel set alight, shouting: 'A jink on the Vornic... May his house melt just like this!' [...] Less than a year passed, and the Lady, that is Băleanu's wife, died in labor. The Prince, her father, died poisoned by his kin, and it also turned out that the house of the boyar who had signed off on the act was also extinguished. And this is where we got the expression 'Târgoviște jinxing'. Nobody could ever again attempt to get that land")
    • ALT1:... that Emanoil Băleanu (pictured), later a Regent of Wallachia, was arrested and forced to sanitize a hospital during the 1830s cholera pandemic? [...] Au șezut trei zile acolo arestați, până au adus spitalul în curățenia cerută ("General Kiselyov, on his visit to Filantropia Hospital which was set aside for our cholera patients, finding that hygiene there was imperfect, immediately fetched [Băleanu and Odobescu] and after bitter reprimand arrested them inside the hospital. [...] They spent three days there, until they got the hospital to meet required hygiene standards")
