Cut Sleeve edit

Created by Kingoflettuce (talk). Self-nominated at 14:12, 17 February 2016 (UTC).

  • The current hook seems to imply that God is a homosexual, because of the capitalized "H" on "He". I'm not sure if this is a mistake on the author's part or a deliberate attempt to fool viewers, but you can count on scores of people being rather offended by it. Subsequently, I'm not really comfortable with these kinds of hooks going up on the main page. Other than that: I don't have access to the books, so I can't check for copyvio's, but the article has enough content and seems to be adequately inline sourced.—♦♦ AMBER(ЯʘCK) 17:27, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
  • To be fair, in this particular instance "He" isn't even functioning as a pronoun — it's the actual proper name of the story's protagonist. An alternative way around the ambiguity, if this gets promoted to actual DYK, would be to use the character's full name "He Shican" instead of just "He", although in reality I suspect that the ambiguity ("He was gay? He who?") was in and of itself the primary purpose of this nomination. Bearcat (talk) 00:31, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

  • DYK checklist template
General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Core criteria checked in accordance with above template. Earwig copyvio score is zero (now that's originality!). AGF for Chinese sources, with a tip of the hat to the editor for foreign language skills. This reviewer prefers ALT0 as much punchier. Graphic appears a bit delicate for DYK use to these aging eyes, but is approved. Fascinating article.Georgejdorner (talk) 17:30, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

  • Comment: I'm seeing this because in my capacity as a member of WP:LGBT, it turned up in my dailyish review of User:AlexNewArtBot/LGBTSearchResult. I agree with the reviewer's assessment of the article; representations of homosexuality in non-Western cultural output are definitely the kind of thing we need more of on Wikipedia, so in principle I like this very much. That said, the chosen hook ("He was gay") strikes me as the kind of thing that would work better if we were choosing April Fool's Day DYKs (where there's a little more latitude to aim for funny) than it does as a normal everyday selection. So if this were to go ahead right now, I'd prefer to see a more substantive and genuinely informative hook rather than a pun on the protagonist's surname — although I'd have no objection to putting the existing hook on the back burner as a potential April Fool's Day entry. Bearcat (talk) 00:53, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Sure, I'd much rather it as a 1 April hook. Rarely do such beauties come by! Kingoflettuce (talk) 14:40, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Sorry, but I don't think these hooks work and I don't think they are acceptable, as they suggest there is something unusual or quirky about merely being homosexual. Suggested alt:
  • ALT2: ... that Pu Songling tells of a man besotted by a cut sleeve? Gatoclass (talk) 06:54, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
I respect your suggestion, but it is by comparison a boring one. Respect the decision of earlier reviewers, please. And most certainly these hooks do work, especially for 1 April (the date it's slated for appearance on the Main.) Kingoflettuce (talk) 15:29, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
Hooks are accepted or rejected on this project by consensus. So far on this one, we've had one person other than the nominator supporting the original hook(s), and three expressing reservations. So I definitely think this one needs further discussion. Gatoclass (talk) 22:30, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
I have to agree with the original nominator, I don't think there is anything wrong with the first 2 hooks (though I would decapitalise He) simply because it is a generic statement that will make people wonder "who is homosexual"? And be more likely to click on it. (I suppose you could say its along the lines of that Who's On First routine) I'll make an official review on this if asked. The C of E God Save the Queen! @The C of E: Thanks for providing refreshing and reasonable insight! (Furthermore, it's an April 1 hook... Have people forgotten that a sole question mark was once featured (based on archives)? D'oh "acceptable") Please do, thank you very much. Let's get down to real business. Kingoflettuce (talk) 15:26, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
Date and length fine. AGF on offline sources. I much prefer the original as it does draw the most attention. I am OK with this, although as it is an AFD hook I do support the case for decapitalising "He". The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 21:54, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
  • ALT3 verified to the source provided, which is the full text of the story itself (in Chinese). However, I think the original hook would be more attention-grabbing on April Fool's Day. sst✈ 14:57, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
