Carissa Yip

Created/expanded by HughieGRex (talk). Self-nominated at 16:00, 31 October 2019 (UTC).

  • New enough, (barely) long enough, and adequately sourced. Interesting hook, within rules. QPQ check finds that this is the nominator's first nomination, so no QPQ is needed. Hook source verified. Earwig found no significant copied text. Good to go. —David Eppstein (talk) 01:47, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
  • I think linking Grandmaster would be helpful for those unaware of chess terminology. MIDI (talk) 12:10, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, and first reorganized and edited the article for Wikipedia style. I left one sentence about her notability in the lead, and moved the FIDE information further down. I didn't see anything about the 2019 Spice Cup in the article, so I added it (it should not be in the lead). Please look over my edits and let me know if there are any mistakes. Thank you, Yoninah (talk) 22:18, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
  • The nominator has not edited since November 29. At this point, if someone wants to rescue this nomination, please do. Yoninah (talk) 13:06, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
  • What is in question? Just Yoninah's edits? I added another source to the article for a new claim (top female chess player in the US in September 2019) and added some others to the talk page for lack of time adding them now. Might suggest the following ALT1. Also, proposing ALT2 as a reformulation of the first proposed hook to avoid referring to someone as "a female". — Rhododendrites talk \\ 19:26, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT1: ... that in September 2019, 16-year-old chess player Carissa Yip was the top rated woman in the United States?
  • ALT2: ... that the age of 10 Carissa Yip became the youngest female chess player ever to beat a Grandmaster?
  • Adding a tick for the new hooks ALT1 and ALT2 after checking the added sourcing. I agree with the reasoning for preferring ALT2 over the original hook; I think it's slightly more hooky than ALT1 but don't have a strong preference between the two. —David Eppstein (talk) 19:44, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this. I think the hook would work well in the quirky slot without any superlatives:
  • ALT0a: ... that chess player Carissa Yip beat a Grandmaster at the age of 10? Yoninah (talk) 20:55, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
