Aberbargoed Grasslands
- ... that the Aberbargoed Grasslands were designated a Special Area of Conservation primarily due to their population of marsh fritillary butterflies, which was threatened by an arson attack? Source: JNCC site
- Reviewed: Protocol Wars
- Comment: There are a few different ways to word the hook, any ideas on improvements are welcome.
5x expanded by Kosack (talk). Self-nominated at 15:10, 2 March 2020 (UTC).
- Article is long enough, sufficiently expanded, though there's plenty more in the sources that could be added, nominated in time. QPQ done. Mostly sourced inline to reliable sources, but the fact in the lead that it is managed by Caerphilly County Borough needs to be explicitly cited somewhere. Appears neutral.
- Earwig did not find any copyvio and I did not see any obvious problems in spot checks.
- Hook is concise, but I'm not sure whether it is true -- [1] is a little unclear but seems to state in the table under 3.1 that the SSSI was designated for its grassland, rather than the butterflies, which are SAC? This is fairly easily reworded, but I also didn't find it all that exciting. Could it be jazzed up by bringing in the arson attack? Or at least mentioning the decline in numbers in the UK. The current version needs a grammar fix (consistent plural for the grasslands).
- Not absolutely necessary for DYK but...
- Images in the article would be nice, even if just eg a marsh fritillary somewhere other than the reserve; could also illustrate the hook.
- I was confused as to how much of the area was reserve vs SSSI vs SAC, and when it was designated SSSI compared with the arson.
- Do you know what happens to the EU conservation status post-Brexit?

- New hook looks good, but needs some minor grammar fixes: "its" needs to change to "their" (grasslands plural); and the final "were" probably needs to be "was", as it applies to the population.
- Re areas: every source I look at gives slightly different values but [2] gives two different values for Aberbargoed in the SAC & SSSI sections. Also [3] states "Not all of the SSSI is within the SAC, however."
- Looks like SACs continue to exist, for the moment at least [4]. Phew. Espresso Addict (talk) 22:57, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- I've amended the hook and added that ref with an amendment on the size of the area on the article. Kosack (talk) 07:38, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- Rereading the sources "nearly destroyed" is perhaps hyperbole, sorry; how about just "threatened", per the article? Espresso Addict (talk) 14:52, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
