The caldera was formed by the eruption.

... that the 1257 eruption of Samalas (caldera pictured) was one of the largest eruptions of the Holocene, and may have triggered famines in Europe and the Little Ice Age?

Comment: QPQ will have to wait until tomorrow. There are several different interesting hook facts to pick from if this one is too long (hopefully not), they depend on different sources.

@Craig Franklin (SLQ): QPQ is in. Not sure if "eruption" needs to specify that it's "volcanic"; are there that many other kinds of eruptions? And the hook is fairly long already.
