Proposal to merge edit

2 articles, same topic. Both well written, but this one seems to be fit into the overall Category:Ice hockey tournaments better. I like some of the writing and layout of other article too ... I'd like to see us adopt the best of both. ... ColtsScore 08:07, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
--forgot to mention, this page only deals with the U-20 championships, I think the U-18 one should have its own page too. ... ColtsScore 08:22, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I want a new name along with the merge edit

The IIHF still calls this tournament the 'IIHF World U20 Championship'. Here's the IIHF calendar with 2006-07 U20 listed. I know the Swedish site for the 2006-07 calls it the World Junior Championships, but the IIHF is the organizing body. I think their name should stand.
World Juniors, WJC, World Junior Championships (etc, etc) are the common names, more recognizable for marketing, and so they get used a lot. We can make redirects for all those names and point them to the article.
I also think there should be a "IIHF World U18 Championship" page too. This tournament occurs in April, and has nothing to do with the 'world junior championships' in Dec./Jan.
Finally, the IIHF World Championships are the men's over 20 ones that just took place in May.
Three different articles, with the official IIHF names. What does everyone else think?

Sounds good to me. The content from the Ice Hockey World Junior Championships was just a straight cutout from the main Ice Hockey World Championships, so it might not be as cohesive. Let's pick the official title, split the U18 out into it's own article. I'm busy today, but if this isn't done, I can do it on Saturday. -- Jeff3000 09:26, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I would have to agree with Jeff3000 on this too I think.   Eric B ( TCW ) 10:08, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

We should use te official name, and then in the article, mention that it can be called the World Junior Championships. Kaiser matias 13:39, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree with ColtsScore on this proposal Cs-wolves 15:21, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

One thing to keep in mind, is the policy on Naming conventions. It states, "Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature." Since it is more commonly known as the World Junior Championships, I believe the article name should stay as is. -- JamesTeterenko 15:56, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Keep it as is, as no one calls it by its "official name" --  Earl Andrew - talk 19:10, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Keep the name as it is and merge/redirect the other article. BoojiBoy 20:12, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Agreed as well. The articles should be merged, but "World Junior Ice Hockey Championship" is the name most of the world refers to this tournament as. Its formal name is simply for classification purposes within the IIHF. Resolute 23:28, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

My take is that NC would make "IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship" (singular, not plural...) seems like it's a good enough choice, although we could move it to simply "World Junior Hockey Championship" if there isn't a similar thing for field hockey. Similarly, I see "IIHF World Hockey Championship" more often than "Ice Hockey World Championship" where I'm from. kelvSYC 20:23, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ok, regardless of the name we pick, which can be decided later, I'll start merging the info. -- Jeff3000 23:14, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
The merge is done, some content from Ice Hockey World Junior Championships was brought into this article (very little), and some content was put into IIHF World U18 Championships.

I agree with Ice Hockey World Junior Championships. Also, when the senior tournament is "Ice Hockey World Championships", the association is very clear. --Legalizeit 08:18, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Personally, I would rather have it by the "U20" name that the IIHF calls it. I have no clue why in Canada, that we call it something else... ... probably because we practically ignore the other major "Uxx" Tournaments that other countries seem to excell at. I'd prefer to see the formal international use name here, as this is an international event... and we are one of the few countries to call it the WJHC. DMighton 10:12, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree with DMighton. Wikipedia should use official names, with redirects using the informal names used in the media and with the public. --FrankCostanza 17:10, 11 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thirded, as it were. One of the most useful things on Wiki is being able to find what something is referred to officially, rather than colloquially. Most of the time, folks won't even recognise that they've been redirected. Battlemonk 05:12, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
We could always set up redirects. Redirects Are Cheap. I've only ever seen it referred to as the WOrld Juniors, possibly because Canadian media are the only english-speaking people reporting on the world juniors.  RasputinAXP  c 12:59, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Seems the official name is "IIHF World U20 Championship", and we should use precisely that, with a note that it's commonly called "World Junior Hockey Championships," with a redirect from the latter to the former. Doogie2K (talk) 20:19, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ok, so vote count so far is: (as far as I can tell)

  • 8 votes for the official name IIHF World U20 Championship Altered name to fit IIHF site. Doogie2K (talk) 20:19, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • 6 votes World Junior Ice Hockey Championships

What if we split the difference and call it what's on the official Swedish site for next year "IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships"?
Also, redirects for all the different names to make sure everyone can find the article. ColtsScore 02:05, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

List of champions edit

Shouldn't the list of champions combine the totals from Russia and the Soviet Union ... although I think it's nice to see Canada on top, I don't want to claim top spot until we truely deserve it. Would like to know what you think. My opinion is that if Quebec leaves Canada one day and competes on it's own, then they would start counting from zero, but the rest of the country would continue counting metals from where they left off ...

Russia and the Soviet Union are separate political entities... and really, why wouldnt you unclude the USSR's history into Ukraine, Belarus, etc as well then? Similar situation with the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the Czechoslovakia. Different entities. Russia and the USSR are also commonly separated by the media, etc as well, so that is what we should also go with, IMO. Resolute 18:53, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

You should probably keep CIS's totals with the Soviet Union's. They were similar enough in geography. And please count the totals before you change things.

For coninutity sake even, it should be changed either here or at the Ice Hockey World Championships page, where it does list them as seperate contenders. tgok 21:23, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Resolute. Joe Dick 23:16, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Separate article for each year's tournament? edit

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to make separate articles for each year's competition e.g. 2007 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships just as it is with the senior world championships. It seems to me that would more relevant info on the subject. AEJ 03:02, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I seem to have missed the link to that article in this article. :-) Maybe it could be listed in a more prominent position? Or maybe I just need new glasses. :-) AEJ 03:05, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tournament origins edit

If this tournament began in 1974 as this article says, why does the history page at http://www.iihf.com/archive/archive.htm only show medal tables starting in 1977? - ds

The tournament was first started in 1974, but I believe that it was considered more of a regional tournament at the time, or was not sanctioned by the IIHF or something along those lines. In 1977 it gained whatever was necessary for the IIHF to recognize it as such. FWIW, Hockey Canada lists all the way back to 1974. Resolute 21:21, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
There we go: From 1974-76, it was an invitational tournament, not a world championship. [1]. Resolute 21:26, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
