could this be the basis for the mutant in ultimate x-men volume 8 (New Mutants)? His powers were similar however his kicked in much faster (actually 'vaporizing') and covered a wider radius (well beyond touch). Also, he had no compulsion per se, it was just an uncontrollable power.

He can't be an Omega-level mutant. Omega-levels have full control over their powers. Someone who is very strong, but can't turn their power off is a beta mutant.24.0.171.189 (talk) 07:34, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Whilst there are numerous defs for Omega Level Mutants, this is not one of them. Iceman is conisdered one and he clearly does not have full control over his powers (evidenced by what Emma Frost did with them when she took control of Icemans mind). The def that is used most often is that they have unlimited potential, so in a way, Wither can be conisdered Omega.Wild ste (talk) 18:52, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I believe they reference what his clothes are made of in one of the issues, as something he has to deal with. He can't destroy just anything that contains carbon, it has to be something that is alive or was alive at one time - ie cotton and leather would disintegrate from his touch (as shown in one of the first issues of New Mutants) --Ghola8

what a waste of character, they did such a big-deal backstory about this dude back when he was first introduced in 2003 and up, but then they finally got up around putting him to a fuckin permanent sleep.

and all this evil face heel turn was for WHAT ? to get inside Selene's hot pants ? what a waste....this guy is the NewMutants equivalent of Sasuke uchihan from Naruto-verse.
