how the heck is this the 5th most viewed article on wikipedia? 02:12, 31 January 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.197.6.164 (talkcontribs)

It's not; if you look at page view statistics, almost no one is actually looking at this article. You may think it is being highly viewed, but that's only because (for some reason) Wikipedia article traffic statistics is erroneously counting calls (?) to index.html as page views. (Number 5 on the list, at the moment.) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 00:28, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wouldn't it be better to redirect common default-homepage filenames to the Main Page? - knoodelhed (talk) 06:41, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pleas replace Image:Www.wikipedia.org screenshot.png with Image:Www.wikipedia.org screenshot 2013.png. Thank you. --Steinsplitter (talk) 21:56, 13 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Done, but the page wasn't protected, so you could have done it yourself. If you meant to upload the new image in place of the existing image, you should request it on File talk:Www.wikipedia.org screenshot.png. Note that some people might want to keep the old image for historical reference, though. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 01:30, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Strange, the page was protected (cascading??). There is no need to re upload. We keep the old file per historical reference. Regards --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:57, 14 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
FYI for historical interests — the chain of action went as follows:
  • Noticing that W/index.php got tons of hits, I created it as a redirect to this article.
  • The redirect was one of many potential spambot targets listed at User:John Reaves/PT, which has cascading protection enabled
  • Unknown to me, when a cascade-protected page links to a redirect, cascade protection applies to the redirect's target
  • As a result, the entire article was transcluded on John's userpage, and it therefore was fully protected
  • Someone notified me of the situation, and the following conversation ensued: message 1, message 2, message 3, and message 4
  • I removed the redirect from John's userpage and added full protection directly. This has the safe effect on the redirect but doesn't affect the full article
Hope that this is of interest to any wikiarchaeologists. Nyttend (talk) 15:46, 24 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Erroneous traffic coming here.

edit

Several previous discussion (above) relate to the weirdly massive popularity of this page.

I've just figured it out - and started a discussion on the Village Pump tech section to see if we can get it fixed:

Please join in at: Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#https:.2F.2Fen.wikipedia.org.2Findex.html

This discussion of 2014 has been moved to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_130#https://en.wikipedia.org/index.html but the issue was never solved. I land at this page from the Chrome App on an Android phone, while Firefox and DuckduckGo bring me to the expected Wikipedia page about the subject I was looking for.. How can this be fixed? Rename / move to "Web server directory index"

edit

Calling a web server a "webserver" is like calling a train station a "trainstation."

Unlike "web site" vs. "website," there is no apparent trend away from the compound form (two words). Also, anecdotally, drawing on 20+ years as a web server administrator, and as a native English speaker, it just sounds wrong.

There are, however, fully-protected redirects like index.html, as well as some bot that adds (or used to add) a link to this article to user pages whenever new users attempted to make edits to Main Page, so I can't just "fix it."

Is this a pointless endeavour, or are there automated tools to help with things like this (fixing all the double redirects, for example)? I'll be fine if someone says "don't worry about it, it's too much work for such a trifle," but thought I should ask anyway. --Ernstkm (talk) 16:53, 13 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
