The version as written was only a shell for the final articles. I am collecting references and additional material and am expanding it, and also adding references.
Al Zimmermann has pulled down his very popular webpage about computer problems, but there are many references and discussions of it all over the web. I will add more references
On 2 August 2021, it was proposed that this article be moved from Water retention on mathematical surfaces to Water retention on random surfaces. The result of the discussion was moved. |

Removal of links: I had links on there to "Watershed (image processing)" and "Drainage basin" which were removed. The first page was in fact suggested as a repository for this material when the viability of the present page was being discussed, so it must have some relevance! The water ponds here are exactly drainage basins, so it also seems relevant to access that one. Finally, the link from the Magic Square page to this one was removed, but of course, there are several specific examples of magic squares on this page, so it is also legitimate and useful Rziff (talk) 21:47, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
"Mathematical surfaces"
editThis article needs to be deleted, merged or, at the very least, renamed. The current title is not accurate - magic squares and grids of random height are not "mathematical surfaces". The title makes the article seem to be about a more general topic than it is. In fact it's about a very specific problem, like you would find in a programming contest, not a mathematical topic or concept that belongs in an encyclopedia. Aside from the naming issue, I really think this article should be deleted. ALongDream (talk) 00:45, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Water retention on mathematical surfaces → Water retention on random surfaces – The title of this article does not accurately reflect the article scope, which focuses entirely on grids with squares of varying height. After removing some WP:SPS-based magic square fancruft putting undue emphasis on a highly specific problem from a single programming contest, the only remaining content is entirely on a model consisting of a grid with squares of random height. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 20:42, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- Support With the cruft gone, the scope of the article is "random surfaces", so the move makes sense. Also, "mathematical surfaces" just sounds off. Both the "water" and the "surface" are mathematical; we're not somehow trying to pour real water onto an abstract entity. If we did have non-cruft content for other classes of surface, then we'd still have to change the title. XOR'easter (talk) 22:30, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- Comment Shouldn't it on 'arbitrary' surfaces not 'random' as this applies to any surface not just ones that are randomly generated—blindlynx (talk) 13:40, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
- Except it doesn't, really, though. The content is all about randomly-generated shapes. And the meaning of "arbitrary" in the title would not be clear, I think. XOR'easter (talk) 00:13, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
