Protection edit

Is semi-protecting the page still necessary? It's been over a year since it was semi-protected. --Scorp Stanton (talk) 17:20, 22 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

What Killed The Ultimates? edit

I notice that the section on sales/reception ends with Ultimates 3, as if U3 were the last noteworthy installment of the series. The truth is that U3 effectively killed all enthusiasm for the characters, and with it all the momentum the Ultimates had gathered. Why? Loeb is a fine writer. Joe Mad is-- well, Joe Mad. Mad is fine at what he does, but he's no replacement for Bryan Hitch. One thing I've noticed lately is that fans seem to put more stock in writing these days. When asked, one fan told me he pays little attention to artwork and can hardly be expected to know one style from another. But here's the thing: that's all bull. A fan may not be able to tell one style from another, but does anyone really believe Bendis' four year run on Daredevil would still be hailed as one of the all-time best DD stories if Humberto Ramos had drawn it instead of Alex Maleev? Because I'm here to tell you, had that been the case, it would have just been another Daredevil story, nothing special. And that's exactly why Ultimates 3 failed; because Mad's artwork was nothing special. It disappointed fans so badly that not even the stunning work which followed it could quite make up for it. And the cheap, offhanded way that Ultimate Spider-Man was killed off at the end of Ultimate Avengers didn't help at all. People think they don't notice artwork, but it's the first thing to hit the reader, making it the most important impression of the writer's worth. That's an impact that's hard to measure, and believe me, it makes all the difference. Indeed, the reason I pay so much attention to art is that I can stand mediocre writing if the art is outstanding, but not even the most impressive writing is worth putting up with bad artwork. It took me decades to learn that. It was an important lesson, as it saved me from the frustration of having to read the conclusion of a story that switched artists with the final installment. Because they do that. They draw you in with fantastic talent, then switch to less expensive talent once they have you hooked, which affects the story much as it would if, say, William Shatner were replaced with another actor for the last half hour of a Star Trek film. It negatively impacts suspension of disbelief and pulls your interest to shreds. Of course, art in comics today is generally better than it used to be, so the effect is not as obvious as it was in the 70s, but it still happens. The result is something like what happened with Ultimates 3. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thetrellan (talkcontribs) 01:49, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

In Serious Need of Updates edit

This entire article on the Ultimates is in serious need of updating. It basically ignores the entire Reed Richards as villain sagas and jumps ahead to events past Cataclysm, which has only just started. Perhaps, as the writer of "What Killed the Ultimates" has commented, Wikipedia readers lost interest in this page as well, after the debacle that was Ultimates 3?
