Requested move 24 April 2020

edit
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: procedural close with no consensus to move. I see there is further discussion for a merge in another topic; which is a separate matter. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:05, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

UFC 249 (May 9, 2020 event)UFC 249: Ferguson vs. Gaethje – The event title on Wikipedia is too raw and stating only UFC 249 no good considering 2 events with name. I am here announce a one-off clear move request for this specific event after constant event cancellations. Regice2020 (talk) 21:23, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Oppose - Makes no sense at all. A main event can change at any time due to any reasons. We never add it to the title of the aticle. The date is still the same, regardless of that. I changed the first event's title by adding its date as well, but it was reverted. Makes more sense to do that again than your idea here.Gsfelipe94 (talk) 23:09, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Fbdave I think you meant redirect to UFC 249 instead of UFC 149. Cassiopeia(talk) 01:51, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I fixed my comment. Fbdave (talk) 02:21, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Fbdave I think you also meant UFC 249 instead of UFC 149 on your ".....canceled event currently at UFC 149" as well. Cassiopeia(talk) 03:48, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Firstly the event was a good idea on not happening. Florida announced that "Combat Sports" are essential service and FL Gov says, "people" were starving for content during COVID-19 pandemic. Honestly, that a stupid Florida decision. That stupid going get more people infected. The current title is too raw and must be changed to another title without using parentheses. I have inserted a very logical one-off title change request to match Main Eventers! and distant away from the same UFC 249 title. Regice2020 (talk) 02:32, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Stop acting like you are completely right and it is a one-off thing. Your text does not have a good structure to start with. There's nothing related with the discussion when you say "honestly, that a stupid Florida decision. That stupid going get more people infected". Regarding what Fbdave said: I agree. I'd see no problem in changing this one to UFC 249 and then adding something (as I did previously) to the other event's title. All PPV events are simply named UFC XXX. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 02:42, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
IN good faiths, I understand sometimes you like to submit a edits without adding the reason until something ticks you, but this is not the normal "All PPV events are simply named UFC XXX." case. This is a special case were UFC decided to rename the 250 to a cancelled event name called UFC 249. This "special case" prompted a one off name change.Regice2020 (talk) 02:57, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Regice2020, All in all this is still UFC 249 event irregardless of the previous postponing the date, new venue and card where this do happened in many other UFC events as well except this one do have link to covid-19. Kindly read my suggestion below for merging and redirect. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:15, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Regice2020 I don't always add reason to something obvious like reverting vandalism or adjusting some details. Still has nothing to do with the question once again. As I mentioned previously, it makes no sense to add the main event when that's something that can change and this is the same ME as the first 249. UFC Fight Night events are titled with the main event, that's OK. PPVs are not. If a title change should be made here (or on the other article), it should be something different like some of the ideas already given here. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 13:21, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Instead going for a instant Direct Move. You should of used regular RM to have community assist on the name to avoid this.Regice2020 (talk) 18:28, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Regice2020 and Ppt1973: We can request deletion by creation (G7) - ping Ppt1973. Cassiopeia(talk) 01:40, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I seek Move Request extended until May 6th, 2020 due to low participation caused by COVID-19 Pandemic @Gsfelipe94: Reviewed multiple sources and saw the New UFC 249 (May 9, 2020) is not same as the old UFC 249 event (April 18, 2020). UFC indeed did changed the UFC 250 to New UFC 249. Now with all these hasty actions on this page and usual sudden involvement..this move request best to be extended. The old UFC 249 would best to be move to a new name UFC 249 (cancelled event) as the IP stated. Regice2020 (talk) 05:24, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Regice2020 and Gsfelipe94: Regice, the discussion do have some editors involved, and more most discussion, you dont see anyone participate or maybe just one/two editors - this is considered very good involvement from editors as you might not noticed for you are new to MMA Wikipedia. Secondly, Regice and Gsfelipe94, if possible, do talk to some experience MMA editor prior request move/change of name we could just have a few discussion without involve a closing for it take a long time and Regice, PROP can not be done unless it is for uncontroversial deletion. (Regice2020, Do come to me if you need further clarification/assistance for I am one of the new page reviewer and counter vandalism trainer). Finally, UFC 249 is UFC 249 not change of event except change of date/venue and some cards which we just add the info into the body text for it is the stand editing not only in MMA event pages but for all event pages. UFC 249 stays as it is and this article change back to UFC 250 and change the body text. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 05:54, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@CASSIOPEIA: I've been on Wikipedia for almost 7 years, already editing MMA articles. I remember when you came in, just like Regice2020, you might remember it. So I'm more than aware and experienced here. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 11:58, 2 May 2020 (UTC) @Regice2020: As CASSSIOPEIA mentioned, the involvement was relevant despite not having a more users than we would expect in other articles. We used to have more editors previously that were more present here, but many of them stopped. So COVID has nothing to do with low participation. As a matter of fact, people should be more at home and using the internet, so participation would be higher in that case. There's no need to extend the discussion. Merge proposal

edit

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

It is unprecedent because they usually just skip the numbered event and move one. But in this case, there's a lot of background for the original April 18 event as well as the May 9 to simply merge both. It breaks the timeline as well, as people would not easily know that a event was canceled. The other ones were easy to change as I've already done. The note on the top of the page makes it easy for people to see both articles. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 02:31, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Gsfelipe94 Hi, a lot of background is not the problems just like many article the content is lengthily where we could have (1) state in the intro section (WP:LEAD) of the first cancellation and also we would have sections and subsection for the first cancellation info and May 9 (actual event) info as the whole reason for section and subsection. Keep it simple and authentic to the event and name - place all of them in one as not all event page follow the same info, if event have different background such as this one then we just expand the article. Stay safe Gsfelipe94 and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 03:48, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I understand that. If the majority decide to merge everything, we obviously can work it all out. But I'm pretty sure that the proposal that created this discussion is not a good one. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 13:21, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Do you have a source saying that this event was called UFC 250? Fbdave (talk) 15:35, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Gsfelipe94 and Fbdave: all sources point to UFC 249 - changing the date should not have to create new article - as mentioned before, state in the LEAD and body text section just like any other article. This is the way to go - (1) merge back to UFC 249 and redirect this page to UFC 249 or (2) add the info back to UFC 249 and request creator to G7 this article. Gsfelipe 94, pls stop create new article or redicrect other event after UFC 249 again... it is so messy to do that. Please come together and just add info in the bodytext as per norm. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 01:40, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Fbdave:It's all over this article when it comes to it being UFC 250 at first. @CASSIOPEIA: As I've said before, it was not just a change of date that required the move. They moved the May 9 event from Brazil and renamed it UFC 249 (a first for cancelled events). A merge is way better than adding "Ferguson vs. Gaethje" to the title. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 12:28, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
This article clearly states that the May 9 event is the original event, not a new event. The original event was postponed to May 9; it was never canceled. Fbdave (talk) 20:55, 26 April 2020 (UTC), Fbdave (talk) 12:33, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
You still don't understand what I'm saying. The May 9 event was UFC 250 in Brazil. They canceled it, then moved UFC 249 to this date and added three fights from the original UFC 250 to the UFC 249 that was postponed from April 18. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 14:02, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Gsfelipe94: Hi, In regardless how the card was moved from or the date has changed, it is still the same normal way of editing where by some card moves from one event to the other, we just put on the body text - same as normal. Thus UFC 249 still is UFC 249 - same event, but just have more info need to be put on the body text. As mentioned this article redirect to UFC 249 and merge/add additional info on to UFC 249. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:46, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

There should not be 2 articles for the same event. This is madness! Just cover the scheduling and re-scheduling rigmarole in one UFC 249 article! NICHOLAS NEEDLEHAM (talk) 10:46, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree with merging this article with the UFC 249 article, however the UFC 251 event scheduled for June 6 in Perth will very likely become UFC 250 in the U.S. (as mentioned in other articles/discussions in social media. It makes more sense to add the original 250 information into the 249 article and when/if the 251 becomes 250, we mention the rearranging in numbers that the UFC did. Gsfelipe94 (talk) 14:02, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Gsfelipe94, Regice2020, and Ppt1973: Gsfelipe94, This UFC 249 May 9, 2020 article (I just noticed) is original UFC 250 article recreated by Ppt1973. As such this article should be moved back to UFC 250.
  • Speedy Close Despite the people support the merge on one side and other side. The merge request should be closed asap. The move request needs to be allowed to complete after 7 days first. Do not know what is going on here now...someone wanted to delete the page, someone did it hasty undiscussed renaming and something want to merge it. One step at the time. The move request should be completed after 7 days first then we will review the next steps. Merge request should be closed right away.Regice2020 (talk) 21:32, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Agree Definitely should be merged. There's only one event taking place called UFC 249. What took place with the events of April 18th should be merged into the background section of the actual event that takes place, i.e. the May 9th event. This has been the normal mode of action for countless Wikipedia articles across the site. It should have the one definitive article for UFC 249. Seems pretty straight-forward. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.136.235.12 (talk) 19:28, 28 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • @Gsfelipe94, Regice2020, Ppt1973, and Fbdave: Consensus agreement achieved as per above discussion. Info merge to UFC 249 and this article moved back to UFC 250. All info (change of card, covid-19 change of dates/venue/info) to be added in the article (same wit all the UFC covid-19 effected events. Anyone is welcome to transfer/merge the into into UFC 249. Regice2020, pls see if you could withdraw your changed of name request so we dont need to wait for seven day to get someone to close it, if it is not possible then we will wait. I want to thank everyone who participate in this discussion being civil and came to an agreement. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:34, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Fbdave Info can be added into UFC 249 right away. This page (UFC 249 9 May 2020) is original UFC 250 so it will be renamed back to UFc 250. That is all. Cassiopeia(talk) 14:21, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • All UFC events from after original UFC 249 April 18:th should be deleted. UFC 249 should be updated to be May 9 and backgrounds merged with UFC 250. New UFC events should be added when they are officially announced by the UFC. Remove all old and start fresh! Me 10:31, 30 April 2020 (CET) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.87.97.246 (talk)
  • Fbdave Anyone who involved in the discussion can not close the request. The backlog of admin to perform closure is about more than one month. I have requested another editor to help. Stay safe everyone and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 04:11, 2 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Proposal: Move moratorium

edit

The direct move without community feedback are getting out of hand. I am here to proposal moratorium to require users to go through WP:REQMOVE normally before having the title change for next 30 days and allowing users to create another RM after another was closed. Regice2020 (talk) 18:28, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Support or Oppose

edit
  • I agree that "UFC 249," whether the cancelled attempt in April or this rescheduled card in May, are effectively the same event and should share a single page. Past fight cards have had all manner of cancellations, postponements, reshuffling, etc and I don't think there's any precedent for two pages for a single numbered event. Additionally, it will be one of the more interesting and noteworthy cards in history due to the unique circumstances, and the flow from the April attempt to May's is integral to understanding the story of the event for the reader. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:14D:8700:1730:4118:D031:133D:DA40 (talk) 02:30, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Gsfelipe94 As the discussion has closed so I reply you here. what I refer to is that you moved the UFC 250 to to UFC 249 (May9, 2020 event) - see here, even you might edited MMA/Wikipedia out number in years than most of us, it might not be a good move as we have seen in the discussion nor sometimes you removed the country where the events are held for no reasons of all. I welcome any discussions is needed but at times (including I) would make a not favorable edits. Happy to know all the merge and name changed has been sorted and discussions are closed, so we can go back and help each other to sorted out the rest of the event pages (adding info) as well as the fighters'pages. Thank you Felipe for your contribution and work for all the matter involved in mma pages. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk)
