Authenticity check: A search reveals that the phrase "regarded by many" appears in the text. Is the phrase a symptom of a dubious statement? Could a source be quoted instead? Perhaps the "many" could be identified? Might text be edited to more genuinely reflect specific facts?

Plot summary

edit

I disagree that the plot summary is too long. It strikes me as an effective and useful summary of a very long novel. 173.16.252.144 (talk) 02:28, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

It does seem, however, to be based upon the BBC dramatization rather than on the book itself.173.16.252.144 (talk) 15:58, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Several elements of the plot summary are inconsistent with the book. Paul Montague does not undertake a trip to America to build the railroad himself, nor does he provide the information that brings Melmotte down. The immediate cause of Melmotte's downfall is the suspicion that he has forged Dolly Longstaffe's name on a document, allowing him to mortgage a house that he's bought from the Longstaffes without an actual cash payment to them. I am not sufficiently familiar with the book to edit or rewrite the plot summary; but it definitely needs to be done. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.164.36.160 (talk) 01:47, 14 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the summary is a good effort but does need more work to reflect the novel more accurately. The Lawless One (talk) 09:14, 19 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Inspiration for the name Melmotte

Could this name be inspired by that of Melmoth from Maturin's novel Melmoth the Wanderer? Barney Bruchstein (talk) 14:11, 16 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
