I was able to find some information about the racehorse The Assyrian in some of our published books.

   The book Melbourne Cup winners' pedigrees 1861-1990 / compiled by Peter Connelly has some information regarding the The Assyrian's pedigree - a Bay horse, born in 1877, Sire: Countryman, Dam: Tinfinder, Damsire: Tarragon. There is a full family chart available on page 26 of the book.
   The book Cup day : the story of the Melbourne Cup 1861-1960 / Maurice Cavanough & Meurig Davies has information on pages 58-60 about The Assyrian's background (such as the fact that he had previously raced under the name Rothchild), the V.R.C. at the time and a description of the 1882 race itself.

You could also search the digitised newspaper collection on Trove for articles about The Assyrian. When I searched for "The Assyrian" Horse I found several newspaper articles about the racehorse, such as The Assyrian Astoundment and More Anant The Assyrian Surprise.
