Query on the Gods

Shouldn't they be named by the Greek way?

Yes I feel this would be interesting to know as well. One would think some might consider it blasphemy especially in 1800's era United States. Though it was meant in the more metaphorical Roman tradition, which was popular for European tradition states & governments to emulate at that time and much thereafter. The Thirteen Maidens

The articles states the maidens that have turned their back to Washington are said to represent the states that were original colonies that seceded from the Union. However, I only count three maidens turning their back from Washington whereas four of original colonies states seceded (Georgia, both Carolinas and Virginia). Maybe the Virginia maiden just couldn't turn her back to a native son...

Criticism?

I second this question! In an age of highly charged battles over such things as "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and the display of the Ten Commandments in public buildings, it seems odd that none of the many Christian politicians wandering through the Capitol have taken objection to a blatantly idolatrous and blasphemous depiction of George Washington as a god suspended above their God-fearing heads. Latin and Religious Right - Begs some viewpoints?

I wonder if the Romans would recognize George Washington as a Roman God? I don't exactly recall hearing him mentioned at all during Latin class.... I'm pretty sure my Latin teachers, as well as myself, learned in Roman theology, would discount this painting as absolute rubbish.

Further, how do the ultra nationalistic and super patriotic Christian Right... reconcile... their monotheistic religion... and their staunch belief in separation of church and state... with all those Roman gods and goddesses and George Washington being one of them up on their national dome?
