Talk:Teignmouth Electron

Multiple issues

edit

This article, while dealing with a fascinating subject, has a lot of issues. It is unencyclopedic in its style and level of detail. Almost no inline citations are present. The copy editing is poor with frequent mistakes visible. The strange part about how the boat's design could have made Crowhurst go insane seems bizarrely unexpected, and could be original synthesis. Hope someone has time to deal with this. 131.114.9.95 (talk) 17:41, 7 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Tense in lead paragraph

edit

Hi fellow editors, I changed the tense in the lead paragraph from "The Teignmouth Electron is a 41-foot trimaran sailing vessel" to "The Teignmouth Electron was a 41-foot trimaran sailing vessel" since little now remains of the boat, and she is certainly not in sailable (or restorable-to-sailable) condition. Hope others accept this logic - can always be reverted if needed. Cheers Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 06:06, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Confirmation needed of correct identity of replica yacht in photo

edit

Hi all, I added this image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Movie_Making_In_Teignmouth_(17807442084)-cropped.jpg as what I believe is the replica of Teignmouth Electron constructed for "The Mercy" 2018 film. There is a different shot (not CC thus not useable) here: https://devonseaglass.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/img_6055.jpg. Perhaps someone who knows their trimarans can confirm that the identification plus my (invented) caption is correct. Thanks. Tony 1212 (talk) 06:43, 27 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

A little further sleuthing has convinced me that the above statement and caption are OK. There is a very brief clip of the replica in youtube from 2015 here and some additional (non-free) images here. Cheers - Tony Tony 1212 (talk) 19:07, 15 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

More photos added / needed

edit

I have created a "gallery" section with as many open access photos as I can find (all are after the boat was beached/abandoned), plus I captured and enhanced a still frame from the "Deep Water" doco for use as the lead photo (showing the boat just after launch). I am not aware of any other non-copyright images; although a number of copyrighted ones exist, showing the boat in use, all seem to be under copyright restriction etc. It would be nice to show the boat as it was fully rigged etc., but this seems to be the current situation - hopefully better than before, anyway. If anyone has other images (particularly of the boat before she was abandoned) that they can place into Wikimedia Commons etc., that would be fantastic! "She" or "it" to refer to the article's subject?

edit

I note some inconsistent usage of both "she" and "it" in the lede (and possibly elsewhere), referring to the vessel. Which is preferred WP style? Tony 1212 (talk) 21:15, 11 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

OK, I found this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Archive_217#%22She%22_vs._%22it%22_for_ships but still none the wiser... Tony 1212 (talk) 21:20, 11 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
