Dao vs Tao?

edit

As a reader with close to zero familiarity with the topic, I was surprised that the title uses "Dao" but the article uses "Tao" - is this a difference in romanization or a difference in meaning? If so, it might be helpful to explain the difference. Namnatulco (talk) 12:21, 16 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

See the Daoism–Taoism romanization issue article before it's merged. Keahapana (talk) 20:16, 16 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Keahapana: would it be a good idea to rename this article to Taoist schools for consistency? I'm a bit hesitant to just do it, but based on my reading that would probably be the correct decision? Namnatulco (talk) 19:24, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Namnatulco: No need, it's only a matter of time until Daoism replaces Taoism in Wikipedia, see Talk:Taoism#Tick-tock. This perennial argument derives from two conflicting WP conventions. WP:COMMON has favored Taoism and MOS:PINYIN favors Daoism. The title move was proposed and voted down in 2008 and 2022. Check out the Talk:Taoism archive for details.
