Cham minotiry

The source link is dead. But, where is it stated that Syvota, excactly, was home of a Cham minority? I know there were some towns in the region, but never heard of Syvota. Please state the excact sentence that points the town of Syvota with Cham population.Mariosbiourd (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Naming lameness

The Alb. name is already mentioned in the article, though not in the lead, because the article is about the municipality, not the village itself. Thus the alternate name is mentioned where the village is mentioned. Re-adding it in the lead is simply lame. Athenean (talk) 16:43, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I didn't see that it was also below but per naming policy it has to be in the lead. Btw during the Ottoman times it was a municipality with its own mutessarif and its population for obvious reasons was much larger then.--— ZjarriRrethues — ^talk 17:27, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

No it doesn't, because the article is about the municipality of Syvota, not the village. These municipalities are a recent creation, so it doesn't make sense to use a former alternate name right in the lead. No one, no source, refers to Syvota municipality by it's Albanian name. And you can't possibly be serious when likening Ottoman mutasserifs with modern municipalities created by the Kapodistrias Plan of a few years ago. Athenean (talk) 17:37, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Could anyone tell or explain the etymology of the village's name? And furthermore, why its name it's changed, from Sybota , into Syvota. There's another one Syvota further south in Lefkada either, in its southern end. Piro ilir (talk) 18:22, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Disambiguation needed; misspelling

There's also a town called Syvota on the south end of the island of Lefkas (Levkas, Leukas). I actually needed to be able to link to that for something I'm writing off Wikipedia, but the encyclopedia somehow doesn't know the place exists. I assure you it does; I ate lunch there two weeks ago, and Facebook certainly knows the place exists. Also, it's properly transliterated "Sývota". Last I looked, Wikipedia prefers to use rather than ignore diacritics, so a minor rename is in order. I don't really edit here, so I'm not going to formally launch a rename request. Syvota → Mourtos – 1) The name "Mourtos" is undoubtely more commonly used that "Syvota". (Not to mix up with Sybota) "Mourtos" gets exactly 3.340 results, while "Syvota" gets only about 2.100 results. As far as I know, all books on "Mourtos" undoubetly refer to exact this place.

2) "Syvota" is mostly used by works or guide books that promote tourism (e.g "DK Eyewitness Top 10 Corfu and the Ionian Islands, 2022, "Top 10 Corfu and the Ionian Islands") , while in the case of "Mourtos", it is not so pronounced as in Syvota. AlexBachmann (talk) 23:45, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Alternative names in Albanian

Alternative names in Albanian are used in all sources - English, Greek, Albanian - because they were the names of these settlements just 70-100 years ago. Per WP:RS, they can be included in the main article and they are helpful for readers because this is how they can search for more information about this region and per WP:NCGN: Wikipedia articles must have a single title, by the design of the system; this page is intended to help editors agree on which name of a place is to appear as the title. Nevertheless, other names, especially those used significantly often (say, 10% of the time or more) in the available English literature on a place, past or present, should be mentioned in the article, as encyclopedic information.. Albanian names are not mentioned in the first sentence of the article, but per NCGN they can and they should be mentioned in the article. This is common practice across wikipedia e.g. all articles of Turkish cities were Greeks lived mention old Greek names even though no Greeks live in Turkey today.--Maleschreiber (talk) 12:27, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
