Retuning in an actual performance edit

I understand the joke in the finale where the strings need to be retuned before the finale. How does this play out in a normal performance. Do they have to stop and "untune" after the fifth movement? DavidRF (talk) 21:36, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Heh heh, very funny -- but a little too clever, David! :) It's not that the violins are really any more out-of-tune than would normally be the case after playing for 20 minutes. They are merely pretending to be in need of tuning, and engage in the typical process (and sounds) of tuning their instruments for some 10-15 seconds, before they resume playing. Please check the scoring. I don't have access to a full score but there is at least one performance (Roger Norrignton, possibly Stuttgart Radio Orcehestra) that used both trumpets and a bassoon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nigel Simpson (talk • contribs) 01:42, 30 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Good question. In the score at IMSLP, the bassoon is listed but its not an independent part. It plays the same notes as the cello.DavidRF (talk) 02:17, 30 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
