Geologic complex? edit

Does somebody know what exactly is geologic complex? Dentren | Talk 16:26, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've not been able to find a definition either. In the absence of a well-known definiion, it may well be that different authors have used the term in a variety of different ways to suit their own needs. My own take on the term would be that it is a suite of strata and geologic(al) structures (such as folds and faults) which have something of a common or shared history and reflect an event or series of connected events in geological history. An ophiolite complex for example might reflect an instance of obduction of oceanic floor. A complex will not however be a regular part of any stratigraphic scheme since it involves more than simply a set of rocks deposited or erupted during a partciular interval. cheers Geopersona (talk) 07:09, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Rename? edit

Following discussions at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geology/Archive_4#Geological unit, I propose that this page is renamed to Stratigraphic unit. This fits in well with the ICS International Stratigraphic Guide, which describes Lithostratigraphic units, Biostratigraphic units, Chronstratigraphic units and Magnetostratigraphic units, and is also reflected in any search on Google Scholar [1] v. [2] & Google Books [3] v. [4]. Mikenorton (talk) 08:50, 8 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Renamed per links & logic above. Vsmith (talk) 14:36, 8 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
The discussion that Mikenorton linked has since moved to /Archive_4, which I have inserted above. IveGoneAway (talk) 00:08, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
