  • check and fix dead links
  • Unify date format in references, for example December 21, 2009.
  • "He had two younger sisters, Philippa and Mary and an adopted brother, Edward" - Hm .. had .. did they pass away?
  • "He enrolled at University College, Oxford with the intent of studying mathematics .. Since mathematics was not offered at University College, Hawking instead chose physics" - (i) How comes math was not available at a major UK College? (ii) How comes Hawkins missed that while wishing to pursue math?
There is an explanation in the MacTutor biography. Hawking applied to University College, Oxford (a college of the University of Oxford) in accordance with his father's wishes, because it was his father's old college. Mathematics was, of course, offered as a undergraduate subject by the University of Oxford. However, Oxford runs a tutorial-based system in which undergraduates, as well as attending lectures organised at University level, also attend tutorials organised by their college. As University College did not have a mathematics "fellow" (college tutor) at the time, it could not provide tutorials for students who were reading mathematics, and so would not accept applications for that subject. Hawking could have applied to read mathematics at another Oxford college, but chose instead to read natural sciences at University College. I have updated the article with this explanation. I am failing this nomination merely because of lacking feedback from the nominator. My review is incomplete and the next referee will have to freshly check the article. Materialscientist (talk) 06:36, 6 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
