Crystal Quest

Someone on /. says that the sosumi sound was lifted from the Crystal Quest game.

"May have". Doesn't mean yes, doesn't mean no. The exact quote from the Slashdot thread is "Well, I'm responsible for Sosumi, the System 7 beeps, and the startup sound (which all remain in use today). I doubt that the Sosumi sound came from Crystal Quest. As far as I remember Crystal Quest, it's a game that came to the Mac relatively late - at least after these system sounds were added. --TorbenGB 28 July 2005

Eep has a story but it's not as interesting as Sosumi. Regardless, I feel it's worth being part of an article on Wikipedia. Some people don't, however. :/ Eep² 13:36, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Japanese?

What is the Japanese character/word "sosumi," as referenced in the article? I'm assuming there isn't one, so that should be mentioned.

Well, if you check http://www.omniglot.com/writing/japanese_hiragana.htm You can figure out the exact characters. My computer doesn't have the Japanese IME right now, but tomorrow when I get on a iMac at school I might try to translate the romaji into hiragana, unless somebody else can do it before 8:30 am ADT. --Ampersand2006 ^{( & )} 00:24, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

It doesn't really mean anything in Japanese. You'd be best off using katakana: ソスミ. The hiragana is そすみ. The 祖 character you mentioned before is a kanji that's pronounced as "so", but it doesn't really make sense to use it here. 195.241.69.171 (talk) 19:02, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Firmware?

Sosumi is not a startup chime

Howdy! Seasoned Wikipedia fan here. I just wanted to explain why I re-removed the mention of Wall-E from the article.

Sosumi is one of several alert sounds that came with System 7, for when the software needed to alert you. In contrast, the startup chime featured in Wall-E is one of several sounds that have been embedded in Mac firmware over the years, to be played early in the startup process. Sosumi is not a startup chime. The cited interview with Jim Reekes covers both sounds; it does not say that Sosumi was used in Wall-E. ⫷ SkiSkywalker ⫸ (talk) 18:54, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Sonumi

The article mentions that the sound was going to be renamed but the name was left intact for Big Sur. I can't verify this, because as of 11.2.3 (20D91) it's called Sonumi. I'm not sure if I should remove the claim or if the change was made later. --Steven Fisher (talk) 23:06, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

Sosumi as a sound itself
