Talk:Sorenson codec

"For a long time the specifications of the codec were not public" --- Since when to when?

"This codec is now supported in FFmpeg." --- Since when? --Menchi 09:53, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I belive there is more than one Sorenson codec - many sources talk about "Sorenson 2", "Sorenson 3" and so forth. A list of codecs and what they are based on would be much welcomed :-)

Sorenson the Name edit

Is "Sorenson" a personal name? I went to the company site, could not find a reference. --Migs 07:25, 14 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The CEO is "James Lee Sorenson", so I think that answers that. --Kiand 11:09, 14 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I don't believe I missed that! --Migs 17:24, 15 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorenson License edit

Who owns the licenses of this codec now? Is it legal to use that with FFMPEG for encoding? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.205.224.64 (talk) 21:46, 1 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

Redirection edit

hello, I've seen that there was a redirection from Sorenson_Spark to Sorenson_codec. The Sorenson_codec page contains information about Sorenson Video Quantizer codec, which is not really related to Sorenson spark. I mean except the first part of its name. I think it's a bit confusing. Sorenson spark is a codec which is very close to H.263, Sorenson Video Quantizer 1 (SVQ1) is a codec of its own which can hardly be compared to any other codec and Sorenson Video Quantizer 3 (SVQ3) is a codec which can be compared to H.264. Proprietary edit

As Apple began to move away from proprietary codecs with its embrace of MPEG-4,

MPEG-4 is no less proprietary (dozens of companies claim patent rights in it). I'm not sure what the appropriate description here is -- "non-International-Standard"? 121a0012 (talk) 03:39, 8 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Piggy-backed edit

MPlayer uses native codecs to play SVQ1 videos. Win32 QuickTime libraries are used to decode SVQ3 files.

Details aside, this section links to a disambiguation page which leads to no information vis-à-vis "piggy-backing" in the sense of one application using resources intended for another.

If a relevant article is not likely to be listed in the foreseeable future, the link should be removed.

The comment about MPlayer is not entirely correct: MPlayer can use FFmpeg's native open-source decoder to decode all of Sorenson Spark, Sorenson Video 1 and Sorenson Video 3. MPlayer can also use binary codecs to decode SVQ1 and SVQ3. --Regression Tester (talk) 11:12, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
