Talk:Solar probe

Article should (eventually) be split

edit

This seems to be two different articles: (i) an article about solar probes in general; (ii) an article about a rather unimaginatively named proposed NASA mission. If there's ever any significant content then it really should be split into two I think. Matt 00:58, 13 May 2007 (UTC).

Minimum approach distance

edit
The NASA Solar Probe project is a solar probe that will orbit the Sun's poles and take fundamental measurements of the sun at 0.3 AU. (my emphasis)

I don't know what the cited edition of Space Times says, but NASA's site says that this probe is intended to approach as close as 3 solar radii (0.013 AU) to the surface. The 0.3 AU figure may be a confusion with the Helios probes, which approached within 0.3 AU in the 1970s; or possibly with the start of the intensive measurement campaign at 0.3 AU. -- JTN (talk) 20:10, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
