Missing in the history section

When did people start using socks? Are all the people in the world using it? What about archeological findings? I wish there were answers to these questions. This article needs editing regarding tone.

Here's more info, for whoever will decide to improve the article: [1]. I'd be interested in more information on which materials are better at doing away with moisture. I am finding it hard to believe that people in Australia, New Guinea and Sulawesi made socks out of the fur of small animals. This needs a citation.

Sock City?

Saw this mentioned on Colbert Report and did a little homework. I was surprised to see absolutely no information about it here. A large percent of the worlds sock supply comes from Datang, a condensed specialized indutrial center located in China. I confirmed this on a few reputable sources such as [2].

Brainstorming

I think there ought to be a section that talks about the variety of socks. The first paragraph itemizes the uses and purposes of socks, but the article doesn't elaborate. An expanded version of the article could have international socks, kids socks, dress vs. casual socks, othopedic socks, etc. Also, are there any famous socks or historical incidents with the critical involvement of socks? Are there any countries that ban socks, or have other legislation involving socks? How about a link to sock hops or the Red Sox? How about a section about socks in sports? What about a section on how to choose socks for the right activity (hiking, dancing, etc), or fashion rules of choosing socks for different occasions or for use with certain clothing items? Can we put in something about sayings involving socks, like "knock your socks off" or "put a sock in it"? There is still a lot of room for improvement in this article. Stump sock

I am an amputee that wears a *sock* on a body part that is not or does not contain a foot: on my arm stump. Given that, I find Wikipedia's definition of 'sock' as footwear too narrow. Stump socks are usually worn to protect a stump, keep it warm, or to compress it similarly to wearing compression stockings to prevent swollen legs. The page is locked. Language wise discrimination against amputees ("you use the word 'sock' without proper legitimation" is what a colleague recently said) is behind other discrimination so you'd want to fix that. What are"tube socks"

If often hear Americans on TV speak about "tube socks" and I have no idea exactly what they are.Eregli bob (talk) 10:22, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

"Tube socks" were knitted without a defined heel. Off the foot, the sock would be a straight "tube". The knit was stretchy, allowing for the sock to fit the heel when worn. The idea, as I recall, was that you could turn it to a different orientation each time you wore it and so even out the wear, the heel area being prone to greater wear than other parts, except possibly for the toe area. As I recall they were somewhat popular in the 70s, perhaps even into the 80s, mostly in white socks for casual and athletic wear. Wschart (talk) 01:45, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
