This article misses a clear definition of what a "smart traffic light" is. It seems to me that its topic is already covered by traffic light control and coordination. -- Robert Weemeyer (talk) 22:38, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I agree that this article misses a clear definition of what a "smart traffic light" is. I disagree that this topic is already covered by traffic light control and coordination. I believe that "smart traffic light" systems are systems which are actuated by using FCD data and this is the main difference from commonly actuated traffis signals. The term "smart" has been recently associated with "Smart phones" and anything that is mobile and connected. I believe that "Smart traffic light" can be seen as an application of this "smart" concept to traffic signal real time regulation. The original smart traffic lights meaning that dates back to 1973 is now lost. This is my opinion. I am Professor in an ITS Laboratory of Traffic engineering. Vittorio Astarita

The term dates to at least 1973 edit

The July 5, 1973 issue of Electronics, pages 68–69, had an article titled "Smart traffic lights prevent errors". It discussed the use of MOS microcomputers such as the Intel 8008 to control intersections to relieve suburban traffic jams in California. – wbm1058 (talk) 19:32, 3 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
