Talk:Sirsi, Karnataka

Latest comment: 1 year ago by Shirasi in topic Sirsi is officially not a city

Population: The intro says 1,20,000 (120,000?), the info tab says 1,17,000 (117,000?), and the body says 117,000. Can someone correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.211.67.202 (talk) 22:17, 6 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Population edit

Using election turn out to decide population figures is wrong considering the election constituency for Sirsi extends beyond the Sirsi city and Sirsi taluka. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SthegreT (talkcontribs) 12:35, 26 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Gate way of Malenadu? edit

I have removed the claim in the article that Sirsi is known as Gateway of Malenadu or Gateway of western ghats. I searched and could not find any source to back the claim. All I found is that Shivamogga is called Gateway of Malenadu as noted in that article. If anyone finds a reliable source that says Sirsi is the gateway, feel free to add it back. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 18:38, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sirsi is officially not a city edit

According to the Classification of Indian Cities (Government of India) Sirsi reamins town because the population density is less than 1000 per square mile making it a town. For more information refer Classification of Indian cities article. Jatt Sharma (talk) 20:07, 3 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I was prepared to change it back to "town", but as you note, there are conflicting reports of the population. I see edit warring over whether it is a city or a town stretching back years; the first insertion of "is a city" at the start of the intro that the history search tool finds is in 2012 by an IP. The official website that we have in the infobox is dead; here's the last version archived at the Wayback Machine, from December 2019. Unfortunately that conflicts with itself: "Brief about Sirsi city : Sirsi is a town in Uttara Karnataka, is a hill station populated with 62,882 people. This town ..." I'm not sure that's a reliable source for its official status even if it were clear, since it has "city" in the URL; there may be misunderstanding about which term to use in English, since looking for a current website I also found this state page for "City Municipal Council" in Sirsi. I suggest looking up the population in the latest published census figures; hopefully the population density is also tabulated there, since you say it determines city status? Failing that, is the city area reliably stated anywhere? Then those figures can all be fixed at all points where they occur in the article. (There's likely a problem with the town vs. the wider area contributing to the discrepancy.) Can you find the census listing? Yngvadottir (talk) 04:02, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Please change it to town it is creating confusions to people, Here is the link you can refer which is from census all the geographical articles from India use this census figure and let this article also use this. Jatt Sharma (talk) 05:59, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jatt Sharma Sirsi is officially City
And User:Jatt Sharma Statement is his original researches : "Sirsi reamins town because the population density is less than 1000 per square mile making it a town"
Please read: http://www.municipaladmn.gov.in/en/about-dma beacuse this article related to Karnataka state, this government website meantions : "The Government of Karnataka has reconstituted the municipalities according to the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act. The towns have now been classified based on the population and other criteria as Town Panchayat (Population 10,000 to 20,000), Town Municipal Councils (Population 20,000 to 50,000) City Municipal Councils (Population 50,000 to 3,00,000) and City Corporations (Population 3.0 lakhs and above). Accordingly, at present there are 10 City Corporations, 59 City Municipal Councils, 116 Town Municipal Councils and 97 Town Panchayats in the state. "
So according to official sources population below 50000 is town, above 50,000 is city in Karnataka state.
as per govenment website Sirsi comes under City Limits not Town,
Population is correct in this article please refer ; http://www.sirsicity.mrc.gov.in/en/node/4
It meantions : "City Municipal Council Sirsi was established on 1866 and was converted as City municipal Council on 10-05-1995 The total extent of area of CMC Sirsi is 11.33 Sq. K.M. and the Population of this city municipal council as per 2011 census is 62,882"
As per official sources Area is wrong so I request to update it to 11.33km² in this article.
So if we calculate population 62,882 and area 11.33km² the population density will be 5550/Km² ( 14374.43 sq mi) ,
So as per User talk:Jatt Sharma original research this place have less population density of below 1000 sq mi is wrong beacuse actually population density is 14374.43sq mi
and I also read article Classification of Indian cities and i don't found term "Town" in this entire article. It is also not reliable sources beacuse of wiki policy WP:NOTSOURCE Tumhiho 07:12, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect population figures edit

The population mentioned in the different part of article is different hence there is no proper population figure sourced. Jatt Sharma (talk) 20:09, 3 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
