Spelling of place names

With the exception of "Iraq", this article seems to use transliterated Arabic names for places, rather than the most common English names. This makes it difficult for a non-Arabic speaker to recognize the places being discussed. For example:

• al-Sind instead of Sindh
• al-Basrah instead of Basra
• al-Multan instead of Multan

While the transliterated names are more "correct", Wikipedia uses whatever names are most common in English to maximize understanding of the text. Kaldari (talk) 19:19, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

List of caliphal governors of al-Sind → List of caliphal governors of Sindh – "Sindh" rather than "al-Sind" is the most common name for the province in English (and also the title of the Wikipedia article on the province). Per WP:COMMONNAME, the title should reflect the most common English name. If there is a reason to use "al-Sind" rather than "Sindh", the titles of the other articles should be changed as well to be consistent. Otherwise it is confusing to readers. 1. Partial oppose. I have no objection to removing the definite article from the title. On the other hand, I believe that changing the name from "Sind" to "Sindh" should not be done. While it's true that the more common English name for the contemporary province is Sindh, it's more common in modern sources to call the region Sind when referring to the historical period in question. Similar to Palaestina Prima rather than Palestine I, Jund al-Urdunn rather than Jordan, Ifriqiya rather than Africa, etc., because the former names are more common to refer to those regions during the ancient/medieval era. For that reason, I feel like the use of Sind is more appropriate under WP:COMMONNAME. Clarification that the modern name is Sindh can be added in the text, if need be.
