The back story does require significant suspension of disbelief, as one might expect an 18 year old prodigy to graduate from medical school in three years or less, but there are few short cuts to the time needed to complete a residency...For surgery, this is usually on the order of 5 to 7 years, depending on specialty, with another two to five years of fellowship to be done. The basic Surgical Boards can be taken anytime after the first five years are completed, but often are delayed until after the first or second year of the Fellowship.
