Indeed a very ancient temple. Its architecture is surely of the indigenous Aryan order. Following the visit of the polymath Shankaracharya to Kashmir this temple and hill was named after him. With the advent of Semitic-Islam in the Valley many followers of Islam in their zeal renamed this temple with Semitic names as was done on many Aryan-Zoroastrian sites in Iran after the Semitic-Arab onslaught. Kalhana mentions Kashmir as the crown of Aryavarta and refers to other regions of the subcontinent as Aryadesa, Aryanaka,.
