Problems with this article

1. It contains no information on demographics – how big are each of these "sects", what percentage of Sikhs belongs to each of them?
2. It seems to not recognise "mainstream Sikhism" ("orthodox Khalsa") as a "sect", reserving that term for "sects" which differ from it in some way. I can understand how that might be an accurate reflection of the "orthodox Khalsa" theological viewpoint, but it doesn't seem right from a neutral studies of religion perspective, according to which the largest tradition would be just as much a "denomination" as its smaller competitors would be. In other religions, we talk about "branches", and sometimes one branch is a lot bigger than the others – for example, Sunni vs Shi'a Islam, Rabbinic vs Karaite Judaism – why can't we use the same approach here? So "mainstream Sikhism" would be the biggest branch, and these "sects" (or groupings of them) would be smaller branches?

I would love to fix the above two problems, but I'm afraid I don't know where to start in doing so SomethingForDeletion (talk) 04:29, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello User:SomethingForDeletion, I recently added a section to the article covering the Tat Khalsa sect of Sikhism, which is considered the orthodox Khalsa group of Sikhism (or "mainstrem Sikhism"). It was missing entirely from the article before. I agree with your points of criticism regarding the article, it is very biased towards judging Sikh sects from a Tat Khalsa perspective. User:ThethPunjabi, thanks for your reply. Since Tat Khalsa is the largest Sikh denomination, I think they should be discussed first, before the smaller ones. That is how many other articles on religious groups are structured (biggest group comes first, then we discuss progressively smaller ones.) SomethingForDeletion (talk) 07:37, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

User:SomethingForDeletion It appears the article has been written to lay-out the sects chronologically by time of emergence, with the earlier sects being the pre-1708 ones and the later sects being post-1708, after the time of the human Sikh gurus, therefore that is why Tat Khalsa is listed under the later section, since it only began to take a cognizant form or identity in the time shortly after the passing of Guru Gobind Singh. We would have to re-write or re-order the entire article to accommodate your proposed changes. Also, we would need to find reliable demographic data on the population figures for each sect, which I am not sure exists. ThethPunjabi (talk) 11:29, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
