Etymology

edit

I cannot find sources which verify the meaning of 'scholar' for 'schuyler.' To me, as native speaker of Dutch, the word 'schuyler' seems to be an archaic spelling of 'schuiler', which means 'person who goes into hiding' (see [1]). Ppnkk (talk) 10:08, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

An alternative hypothesis is that his name comes from the the German 'Schüler,' which does mean 'student'. Ppnkk (talk) 17:00, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

The Meertens Institute, which hosts a database of Dutch given names and surnames, lists no occurrences of the name Schuyler in the Netherlands in 1947, and "fewer than five" occurrences in 2007 (see [2]). This makes it quite unlikely that the name is even of Dutch origin. Ppnkk (talk) 10:30, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

After digging in some genealogy databases, it seems to me that Schuyler is a corruption of Schuylder. For instance, Philip Pieterse Schuyler's mother's maiden name was Van Schuylder. I did find her name as it is usually written (Geertruyt Philips van Schuylder) mentioned in a genealogical record compiled by Pat Wardell, where Van Scholen is used as (apparently) an alternate last name. This might still be consistent with the "schuilen" theory, as the plural past indicative tense of that verb is "scholen" in modern Dutch.

I also found that the word is mentioned as a verb in the poem "De Sombre Maeltyd van Baucis en Philemon" by Dirk Rafaelsz Camphuysen:

Geen tweespalt schuylder onder 't dack,
Geen afgonst, nydt, noch jalousyen,

Here, "schuylder" sounds to me like *"schuilde er", therefore consistent with "schuilen".

I also found "schuylder" as a noun in an act of the magistrates' court of Helmond dated 1444-07-28 (and another one two years before that):

Jan Bremmen heeft geloeft als principael schuylder Henric Bliex soen van Helmont 40 Aerts gulden voer elcken gulden 15 cr

I'm not extremely familiar with middle Dutch, but it seems that "schuylder" could mean "schuldeiser" (creditor).

In any case, I'm not at all convinced that "Schuyler" means scholar. --Rhymoid (talk) 18:20, 4 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Molly Schuyler Age

Something is clearly off: This page lists Molly Schuyler's birth year as 1967, but the page that it links to lists 1979. Neither one cites a source, but, clearly, *at least one of them* is wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.171.211.210 (talk) 22:31, 12 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
