San Diego is one of the Hispanicized forms of James, originating from the name Santiago. It is original name of Didacus of Alcalá. One should note the name Didacus did exist as a big umbrella until Diego / Diago was "Latinized." For more information see Diego article.

You should look into the heraldic arms. Santiago is from Coast of vizcaya Basque contry. Silver sea shell, with 3 golden arrows in azure field.

That will be the oldest if you follow the coast you will find more families and code of arms to galicia. But oldest is from Basque country or even France for the Flour de reus. Flor de LIz in spanish.
