Merge

I propose altar bell be merged here, since I believe that sanctus bell is the more common name. In any event, the two articles deal with the same subject, and one should redirect to the other, with the material from both merged. Fishhead64 02:24, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Sacring bell

The sacring bell is different than the sanctus bell. Although I am having a hard time finding any references easily (all my books are in boxes, and the web isn't helping), the saring bell is the great bell of the church, rung at the elevations. The sanctus bell is generally used for that purpose in most churches, but in mine, we still ring the little bell for the sanctus and the big old bell for the elevations at the consecration. --Sean Lotz 00:16, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

November 2009 - disambiguation

I've gone for a third option. This entry has been a stub article, and then a redirect, but really it ought to be a disambiguation page. The fact is that the term "Sanctus Bell" properly (and historically) refers to a large church bell on the roof or in the tower of a church building - it is therefore inappropriate to simply redirect to 'altar bell'. However, I quite accept that in modern parlance the term 'sanctus bell' is often used to mean 'altar bell', especially among Roman Catholics - but the practice is far from universal. In the Church of England the term is still more commonly used of a large bell rung (tolled) at the elevations. Having a disambiguation page allows the reader to go whichever way they prefer, or to explore both routes. I have to say also that the earlier merge was not done very well. In fact, it wasn't really a merge at all - the stub just became a redirect and a lot of important information was lost.
