Just some info on Sallust. His first race was at Newbury in April 1971, and probably Dick Hern's first runner for Sobell/Weinstock. He disappointed (Mercer says he finished last) and did so again when he reappeared at Royal Ascot in the Windsor Castle Stakes (over 5f). He started favourite for that race run in bottomless going on the Friday of the Royal meeting: his owners' Sun Prince had won the Coventry Stakes on the Tuesday. The big gap in him running (2 months) was explained by Mercer in his biography as being due to him being tried in blinkers after his first race and going so fast he got sore shins on the training grounds. He then ran in the Southampton Maiden Stakes at Salisbury over 5f, which as you say he won. As regards who rode him the only race I'm not certain he was ridden by Mercer was in the Prix de la Porte Maillot, which I think was on the Sunday after Royal Ascot when Mercer was off due to his plane crash the previous week. Mercer's other comment was that 1972 was a difficult year because the stable had 3 of the 4 best milers in Europe. They won the Lockinge, St James Palace, Porte Maillot, Sussex Stakes, Goowood Mile, QE II and Prix du Moulin. It was almost fortunate that Sun Prince was injured after Royal Ascot. Also he finished 4th in the Windsor Castle Stakes as a 2yo (Victor Middlesex (talk) 15:58, 27 June 2016 (UTC)).Reply
